Manchester United update

Brighton 1-0 Manchester United

Pascal Gross’s header squeezed over the line to secure Brighton’s Premier League survival with a well-deserved win against mighty Manchester United at Falmer Stadium. Brighton secured their first win over Man United since 1982 to avoid relegation and confirm their top-flight survival. David de Gea impressed in an otherwise lackluster performance for United.

Red Devil’s boss Jose Mourinho was crestfallen after his side’s 1-0 loss away at Brighton. Mourinho blamed Manchester United's “bit-part” players for Friday's uneven performance in the defeat. Neither Romelu Lukaku nor Alexis Sanchez were fit enough to feature at the Amex Stadium and Mourinho was unhappy with the attitude of their replacements Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. Surprisingly United have now lost to all three of the promoted clubs this season - the Seagulls, Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United.

Friday's display on the south coast was not good enough for Mourinho.

"It was not good enough," said the former Chelsea, Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager. "The players who replaced others did not perform at a good level and, when individuals do that, it is difficult for the team to play well. People always ask: 'Why always Lukaku?' Well, now they know why always Lukaku, and why always this player and why always that player. We are probably not as good as people think we are individual. I am disappointed because second place in the Premier League is important for me. I am not sure every one of my players is disappointed."

“I knew what was going to happen, and I told them, but that is what we got. Brighton had one target, to get the point and celebrate their Premier League survival. Our target was to get points to help us finish second and they clearly showed that, for them, it is more important for them to stay in the Premier League than for us to finish second. They showed it from the first minute and we didn’t show that. We were not able to motivate ourselves. I knew what was going to happen, and I told them, but that is what we got. “The effort from the boys all night was magnificent. That’s a night we’ll remember all our lives because to stay up at home against Manchester United is a special feeling,” said manager Anthony Knockaert.

“I’m not sure,” said Pascal Gross, when asked if he thought his header crossed the line.

“We are staying up!” chanted Brighton’s supporters.

Brighton And Hove Albion Vs. Manchester United - Premier League

Pascal Gross of Brighton & Hove Albion celebrated with team-mate Anthony Knockaert after scoring the opening goal during the Premier League match between Brighton and Hove Albion and Manchester United at Amex Stadium on May 4, 2018, in Brighton, England.

Man United’s award-winning goalkeeper David De Gea warned his teammates that the Red Devils should expect a competitive Premier League title race next season. Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho’s side are on course to finish in second place in the Premier League table this season following Mourinho’s second campaign at Old Trafford. United are a long way behind Premier League champions Manchester City as the Red Devils struggled this season to match the consistency of their cross-town rivals. The 20-time EPL champions are still waiting to win their first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Manchester United lost 2-1 to La Liga giants Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16 to make an early exit from the Champions League. United can still finish the 2017-18 campaign with some silverware if Manchester United can beat Mourinho’s former club Chelsea FC in the FA Cup Final at Wembley later this month. Ahead of the FA Cup Final, De Gea warned his team-mates that the title race will be more competitive next term. United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term in Mourinho’s first season in charge at Old Trafford. The Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup in the 2016-17 season.
