WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE FIFA WORLD CUP?

Formerly called the Football World Cup, the “FIFA World Cup” began in 1930 when the first world cup was held in Uruguay in the only tournament without a qualifying round as only countries which were affiliated with “FIFA” were invited for the competition. Thirteen nations took part in the first ever world cup and Uruguay became the first Football World Cup Champions by defeating Argentina in the final.

Since the first ever tournament in 1930, twenty world cup events has taken place and eight different national teams has won the competition, with Brazil winning a record 5 times. Germany and Italy won 4 titles each followed by Uruguay and Argentina who won 2 titles apiece. England, France and Spain are the only other countries to have won the world cup. The most successful FIFA World Cup Team: Brazil has won the competition a record 5 times (2002, 1994, 1970, 1962 and 1958) they lost two finals in (1998 and 1950). Pele is the only player to have won three world cups.

Germany and Italy have each won four world cups. West Germany has been the most consistent team after 1950 winning 4 world cups and losing 4 world cup finals. Netherlands is the only team to have appeared in the final more than 2 times, but failed to win the world cup final and trophy. They lost three finals (1974, 1978 and 2010). Only European and South American teams hashas won the world cup to date. The United States and Turkey are the only teams (outside of Europe and South America) to have finished 3rd in world cups.
