The battle for the La Liga title and trophy at the top of the Spanish Primera League is raging between titan clubs Real Madrid, 65 points, FC Barcelona 63 points, Sevilla, 57 points, and Atletico Matrid with 55 points to date.

Top Spanish La Liga goal scorer, twenty-nine year old superstar Barcelona striker Lionel Messi was surprisingly suspended for 4 matches for hurling “insulting words” at an assistant referee during Argentina’s 1-0 defeat of Chile in the World Cup 2018 Qualifiers. Messi remains free to play for his Spanish La Liga club, Barca however. Messi is banned for three of his country's four remaining qualifiers but is making an appeal.

Titan club Barcelona described Lionel Messi's four-match international ban with Argentina as "unfair and totally disproportionate" In a released statement, Barcelona stated their "surprise and indignation" at the severity of the  Fifa disciplinary ruling.

"The club considers the four-match suspension finally imposed on the Argentine player to be unfair and totally disproportionate," said Barcelona in a statement to the media. "Finally, FC Barcelona wishes to reiterate its support for Leo Messi, an exemplary player in terms of conduct both on and off the pitch."

In a shocking statement Messi's suspension was announced just five and a half hours before Argentina's 2-0 World Cup qualifier that resulted in their defeat by Bolivia on Tuesday. The loss to Bolivia saw Argentina drop to fifth on the World Cup 2018 table, below the top-four spots for automatic qualification for Russia 2018.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid

Popular Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in Real Madrid’s friendly against Sweden to equal Mirsolav Klose's record of 71 international goals as he moved into the top 10 International goal-scorers of all time in history. The Real Madrid forward, who scored his 69th and 70th international goals in the 3-0 defeat of Hungary, scored his 71st goal to open the scoring at the Estádio dos Barreiros. SR7 slotted past goalkeeper Karl Johnsson in the 18th minute to take his place among some of international soccer’s greats. The goal put Ronaldo joint-ninth in the all-time rankings, alongside Germany’s Miroslav Klose, Saudi Arabia’s Majed Abdullah, Malawi’s Kinnah Phiri and Thailand’s Kiatsuk Senamuang. By equalling Klose’s record, Ronaldo also becomes the joint-third highest European international goal scorer in history. Only Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis (75) and Ferenc Puskas (84) have scored more.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez may make a return to Old Trafford as Michael Carrick hopes to reunite Manchester United’s 2008 Champions League heroes for his testimonial this summer. A United 2008 XI will face Michael Carrick’s XI on June 4, 2017 to celebrate the midfielder’s 11 years at mighty Man Utd, after joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. Others on the squad that beat Chelsea in Moscow include Edwin van der Sar, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Real Madrid’s highly paid striker Cristiano Ronaldo is the third highest goal scorer in the Spanish Primera League to date this season. Recently a statue of CR7 was revealed at the airport named after him. The statue is a bit bizarre, but sculptor Emanuel Santos defended his work. The sculpture did not appeal to many of Ronaldo’s fans but Santos said his work is just "a matter of taste". Santos said the bust, unveiled on the Portuguese island of Madeira, was "not as simple as it seems" to create in response to fans questioning the work's resemblance to the player after it was revealed at a ceremony to name the island's airport after Ronaldo, Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo

"It is impossible to please the Greeks and Trojans. Neither did Jesus please everyone," Mr Santos said. He said that his creation took him 15 days to complete and that the finished item "was a matter of taste". Mr Santos said that Ronaldo had asked him to make minor changes in order to make the player look younger. "He only asked for some wrinkles that gave him a certain expression in his face when he's about to laugh to be changed," he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo beat his arch rival Lionel Messi to be named the world’s highest-earning athlete in 2016. The Real Madrid striker tops Forbes magazine’s list for the first time, having earned $88 million (£70.6m) in 2016, up from $80m (£64.2m) in 2015. Messi follows in second-place with his income at $81m ($65m).

Rumor has it that Wales superstar striker Gareth Bale wants to leave Spanish giants Real Madrid with gossip that Bale is tired of playing in the shadow of Ronaldo. Bale joined Los Blancos in 2013, but for the most part he has played second fiddle to the Portuguese. Former Tottenham Hotspur top goal scorer is said to be frustrated with Ronaldo’s prominance at Real, and reportedly he has made contact with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. The player however insists that he is happy under Zinedine Zidane and wants to win as many trophies as he can.
