Although Chelsea are looking like they may run away with the Premier League silverware, with a win in the first Merseyside Derby of the season on Monday, Liverpool can move up to second on the EPL table, but Everton are are newly hopefull after their dramatic win over Arsenal last week. With a victory against Everton, Liverpool can close the gap between the Blues and the rest of the pack to six points after a revitalized Jurgen Klopp's side returned to their winning ways last week against Middlesbrough following disappointing back-to-back results against Bournemouth and West Ham.
The Reds can leapfrog Manchester City into second place with a win against their local rivals.
Everton won in the league for the first time since October last week, coming from behind to beat titan club Arsenal. Everton have only defeated Liverpool once in their last 19 Premier League clashes, and 22 meetings in all competitions.
Everton will be without captain Phil Jagielka for Monday's Merseyside derby. The defender was sent off late on in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Arsenal and must serve a one-match ban. Midfielder Gareth Barry is available after being on the bench for the midweek clash. Winger Yannick Bolasie is out with injury.
Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge is being considered for a cameo role as he continues to work his way back from a calf injury. Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will again start in place of the dropped Loris Karius and midfielder Marko Grujic is out with a tendon injury.
Fans, Liverpool football players, and Reds manager Jurgen Klopp are sure to be up for this match which already the talk of the city with passions and emotions rising higher by the day as the Liverpool Derby draws closer.
The term "Derby belly," refers to pre-game jitters by fans - "Christmas made or Christmas ruined". Monday night's Merseyside Derby will be the 227th instalment of the rivalry also know as the Liverpool Derby. After massive EPL Match Week 16 clashes, Liverpool and Everton managers and teams have turned their attention to the upcoming Merseyside Derby.
Liverpool Fc Merseyside Derby superstar Lucas Leiva
Ahead of Monday’s Merseyside Derby, Liverpool’s twenty-nine-year-old Lucas Leiva was asked how he feels about the upcoming clash. Leiva made his memorable Premier League debut for the Reds at Anfield and assisted the winning shot in a surprising way in the derby ten years ago. With the score at 1-1 with only 20 minutes remaining at Goodison Park in October 2007, Reds manager Rafa Benitez opted to bring Lucas off the bench to replace Steven Gerrard, shocking Liverpool fans. Lucas’ injury-time shot on goal was handballed on the line by Everton’s Phil Neville and Dirk Kuyt converted his second penalty of the game – the match winning shot.
“To be honest, in that moment, I didn’t think that much about who I was replacing, I was just so excited to be playing in the Premier League for the first time, in a derby match, that I didn’t realize just how much pressure there was on me,” recalled Leiva. “It probably helped me to be honest; looking back maybe it was a risky decision by Rafa because Stevie was always a big player in those games but I just tried to help the team. I think that save told me just how difficult my Liverpool journey would be! But I can’t complain.”
“I think it’s probably the most important game of the year,” said Brazilian Leiva. “Of course, you can progress to finals in the cup competitions, but when the fixtures are announced in the summer you always look for derby day and we know how much it means to the fans.”
Leiva has competed against Everton on 15 occasions since joining the Reds, and still feels the burning desire to beat the Everton Blues. He thinks the passion shown in previous derbys by his former teammates Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher has rubbed off on him.
“With every derby I feel more emotion, more passion. I remember when I first came, how Stevie and Carra used to be on the day of the derby; they were just different on that day. They were electric, I remember Carra couldn’t stay quiet!” added Leiva. “There are no favorites in the derby, it’s a different game from any other, and comes down to who wants it more. Normally it’s decided by the small details.”
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson enjoyed the Reds’ 3-0 win over Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening as manager Jurgen Klopp’s side reclaimed their mojo in a swashbuckling display of their talent and gave renewed hope to their title persuit. Liverpool came out 3-0 winners on Teesside in Premier League Round 16, and the skipper was quick to refocus after Liverpool’s dominant away performance.
For the match Lorius Karius was replaced as #1 goalie by Simon Mignolet. After Mignolet earned a clean sheet in the match, he is likely to be named again as #1 for the Merseyside Derby. Lallana opened the scoring in the first half when he connected with a cross from Nathaniel Clyne. Origi scored in the second period to double the advantage before Lallana added his second of the night and a sixth of the season at 68 minutes. Emre Can missed the trip to Middlesbrough, but the Reds could have the German international back for the visit to their local arch-rivals, but Philippe Coutinho remains sidelined with an ankle problem.
Divock Origi netted his fifth goal in five matches either side of Adam Lallana’s brace as Jurgen Klopp's side made easy work of Aitor Karanka's Boro at the Riverside. England international Lallana posted on Instagram: "Great performance and result yesterday. Some good goals from @officiallallana & @divockorigi, "Focused on derby now #YNWA#".
The victory at Teeside was Liverpool’s first since 2002, and sent the Reds second in the Premier League. Next Liverpool will focus on Monday's trip to Goodison Park for the mouth-watering Liverpool Derby battle against Everton FC.
The new Everton manager will oversee his first Liverpool Derby ever. The Toffees have not defeated the Reds since 2010, but go into Monday's clash at Goodison Park with hope on the back of a surprise victory against mighty Arsenal last week with Koeman in charge.
In their last Liverpool Derby, Everton lost 4-0 in April 2016 after Ramiro Funes Mori was sent off for a horrendous tackle on Divock Origi. Roberto Martinez's term as Everton manager ended three weeks later, with Robert Koeman taking over as boss last summer.
Koeman cautioned his Everton side to stay their cool and not get thrown out of the derby as he prepares for his first Merseyside derby.
"Of course it's not a normal match, we know about the derby rivalry between Everton and Liverpool,” said Keoman. "But my position is to prepare the team and always in these kind of derbies you have an emotional part, and that you need to control. I think it's the most important thing.”
"We showed last Tuesday two different faces in the game. Everybody knows which face we like to have from the start in the game and that's what we need,” added Koeman. "The derby is all about the fans and we understand that, but we need to be calm and stay with 11 on the pitch."
Ahead of the match, Everton manager Ronald Koeman was asked about the Toffees' poor record against Liverpool in the past:
"It's not good, one win out of 19 games. You need to accept how difficult it is, win the game and make the fans happy,” said Koeman. "They are strong, they are doing well, but they lost their way against Bournemouth, they had a draw against West Ham. It's not so difficult because, if Bournemouth can win against Liverpool, we also have a possibility to win the game."
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp talked about the rivalry between the cross-city rivals.
"I cannot say Everton is my enemy since I was 12 years old, five years old, it's not like this. But I love how they live in this city, these two big clubs. Until now I've never had any issue with any Everton fans when I meet them, taxi drivers or whatever,” said Klopp. "A lot of nice people support Everton. So football is not the most important thing in the world but on Monday night I would say for 90 minutes in and around Liverpool it probably is. It is very, very, very, very, very big. It is a very important moment in the season for all of us."
