ENGLAND PREMIER LEAGUE: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 ARSENAL

Manchester United and Arsenal draw 1-1 in EPL Match Week 12 game

In an exciting England Premier League Match Week 12 clash between old arch rivals on Saturday, Arsenal super-star striker Olivier Giroud scored a dramatic 89th minute header ensuring that the Gunners remain unbeaten in all competitions after their opening day defeat by Liverpool. Arsenal are in fourth place on the England Premier League Table going into EPL Match Week 13.

Giroud's 89th-minute equalizer earned Arsenal a point and denied Jose Mourinho's Manchester United side the home win that they deserved at Old Trafford. Giroud's goal is the first the Gunners have scored against a Mourinho team in the Premier League since May 2007, when Gilberto Silva scored in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at the Emirates when Mourinho was Chelsea boss.

Juan Mata opened the scoring for Man United with an impressive left-foot finish from Ander Herrera after 68 minutes. Mata's opener was his third Premier League goal of the 2016 - 2017 season. Only Man United skipper Wayne Rooney (29 goals) has scored more Premier League goals since Juan Mata's debut for the club in January 2014 than Mata himself (24 goals).

"The result in the end is positive for us because we were 1-0 down with two minutes to go,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger after the match. "The players who came on made a massive difference today. When you are 1-0 down and come back to 1-1 of course you have to feel happy. We lacked a bit of sharpness today. What is it down to I don't know but at least we came back."

"Of course it is two points dropped. We were the best team by far. They had no chances to win,” said Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho. "They could not be Arsenal the way they normally play football. We were phenomenal defensively. The way we pressed and the way we controlled their counter attacks. The team played very well. This team at the moment is the unluckiest team in the Premier League. That is the reality."

Mourinho was asked by the media about the penalty that was not given.

"I don't want to speak about it. Andre Marriner is the kind of referee who if he make mistakes against my team there is no intention. He doesn't want to be the star of the game, he is a good referee. I don't want to say if it is a mistake or not. I know because I saw the video, but I don't want to say because he is a good referee."

England and United captain Wayne Rooney received a warm welcome from home supporters when he came on as a sub for Anthony Martial at 63 minutes after a week in the headlines with photos of a late-night drinking session while on England duty.

Quotes from the managers

Jose Mourinho

“I decided to leave Wayne on the bench. Everything is a process. I prefer to say Martial is selected because he was not selected for the French team. Wayne’s fitness is fine. After a couple of days of treatment he was fine. We played so, so well against Stoke and Burnley and couldn’t win. Against Arsenal we have to be very good without the ball. When we have it, Arsenal are the sort of team who will allow us to play. It is important for us to get maximum points against both Arsenal and West Ham, two difficult matches at home.” Not so many smiles from Jose, but then that’s not his style, is it.

Arsene Wenger

“We checked Alexis Sanchez in training yesterday, and he declared himself completely fit, so I had not many hesitations! Carl Jenkinson has to focus, and play the game he knows he can play. He is perfectly fit. It is for sure that we know more about Marcus Rashford this time! We know his quality and we need a strong defensive performance. We must focus on the solidarity of our team.” Quite a few knowing smiles from Wenger during that pre-match interview. He looks relaxed ahead of a fixture he hasn’t enjoyed in recent years.
