England News Update
England and Liverpool footballers Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana are in trouble due to their late Saturday night travel after the match with Scotland to a strip club in Bournemouth that breached the FA's code of conduct. Reportedly, the duo went to private club For Your Eyes Only after interim manager Gareth Southgate, who was formally interviewed for the England job on Monday, had given his players the evening off with orders to return to the hotel by 11am on Sunday, November 6 morning ahead of an afternoon training session. Lallana and Henderson partied for two hours after arriving at 11pm.
Henderson is teetotaler. He and Lallana both started the 2-2 draw against Spain, however Lallana limped off injured while Henderson played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday's match.
Wayne Rooney also came under criticism for his late night drinking session at the team hotel on the same night. Rooney ignored the pleas of Southgate for him to return to his room and turn in.
The FA have since banned players from spending the night away from the team hotel during international duty.
Former England coach Gary Neville criticized the way that the FA dealt with the affair on Sunday, tweeting: 'We now have a situation where two good lads in Lallana and Henderson have to be forced to make an apology. Shocking handling of this. 'You have to trust them (players). If they are going to drink they will.'
Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney injured his knee in the locker room by slipping over an energy drink bottle while leaving the shower after England’s 3-0 victory against Scotland. The injury caused him to miss England's friendly with Spain on Tuesday. Since then Rooney was heavily criticized for drinking in the England team hotel on Saturday evening. Rooney has issued a public apology but could have his captaincy revoked. It has been an embarrassing for Rooney. The 32-year-old was in the headlines with photos of him in the early hurs on Sunday after joining a wedding party at at Herthfordshire's Grove Hotel.
Interim England boss Gareth Southgate, who is expected to be given the job permanently, had reportedly asked Roo to cut short his drinking, but Rooney continued until 5am. Rooney may now be stripped of his England captaincy, and football players on international duty have now been banned from spending nights away from the camp.
FA chief Martin Glenn has confirmed an investigation is underway to establish what happened as Rooney will be the main subject of the Football Association's investigation.
Rooney issued an apology for his behavior, along with a statement reading: 'Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published. Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.
“Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both Gareth Southgate and Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologize. He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures."
