European Qualifiers (Group F)

Friday's fixture will be the 112th between the rivals with England having the edge with 47 wins, 41 defeats and 24 draws. The most recent meeting of the near neighbors was England's 3-1 victory against Scotland at Celtic Park in November 2014. (See historic photos below)

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is set to captain England at Wembley in his side's World Cup qualifier clash at Wembley Stadium in London on Friday evening in a critical, massive game against arch-rivals Scotland. Interim England manager Gareth Southgate said he has no hesitation over Rooney starting the World Cup 2018 qualifying Group F game that kicks off at 19:45 GMT. Thirty-one-year-old forward and skipper Rooney was dropped for England’s previous game that resulted in a 0-0 draw in Slovenia last month.

"He's in a better place than for the last get-together in terms of sharpness and confidence," said Southgate. "He's an experienced player for a game like this and there is no hesitation to be playing him."

Rooney is England's record scorer with 53 goals and has won 118 caps, but was also dropped by Manchester United this season. Rooney has scored two goals for Manchester United this season

In past clashes against Scotland, Rooney scored twice in England's 3-1 defeat over Scotland in November 2014 in a friendly at Celtic Park which was the last time the rival countries met.

"He is playing well," said Southgate. "He's a player when in a rhythm of playing, it helps him."

Southgate has been England boss for four games in temporary charge end with the friendly against Spain on 15 November after the England Under-21 boss Southgate was put in charge of the senior team for four games following the firing of former England manager Big Sam Allardyce after only one match.

Rumor and gossip around the UK is that Southgate may be asked to stay on. With Southgate in charge, England beat Malta 2-0 and drew with Slovenia in World Cup qualifiers.

Last minute team news and remarks

Asked if he wanted the job on a permanent basis, Southgate replied: "I'm really enjoying being in the role. What happens to me is not important. We have to win this game for the country, and because we want to be top of the group and heading to[the 2018 World Cup in Russia. What happens to me is important to my family, but other than that it isn't the purpose of the game. I want the players to enjoy the football and play well.

"My focus is 100% on the match and it would irresponsible and unprofessional for it to be any other way, added Southgate. “'It's not a normal game.”

Gordon Strachan’s Scotland currently have four points on the board following a win against Malta, a draw with Lithuania and a defeat to Slovakia. A win for Scotland would draw them level on points with England.

Steven Fletcher has trained this week after struggling with an injury earlier. Scott Brown will be available for selection having originally retired from international duty. Charlie Mulgrew joined the Scotland team earlier this week as a late call-up.

Wayne Rooney is set to start and captain the home side, England. Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will start the match.

The match will be Scotland's 49th competitive fixture against England at Wembley. Scotland have beaten England 15 times, losing on 23 occasions.

In their pre-match remarks, Scotland players and supporters are optimistic about Scotland’s chances ahead of the match on Friday.

David Marshall, “Wembley is an incredible stadium and a brilliant place to play. “As a kid I dreamed about playing in this fixture so to potentially do that tomorrow night at Wembley will be special. Having Snoddy with us is a huge boost. He did really well for Hull on Sunday and always makes a massive difference when he’s on form. He’s a quality player.

Barry Bannan, “This is the biggest game of my career. England are a good side but there’s no reason why we can’t get a positive result.”

Sir Alex Ferguson, “Scotland will always do well against England. We’ll be the underdog though and that’s always been the case. Scotland excel at almost everything as Scottish people have such intelligence. When Scotland play England they’ll have such a drive and incentive to do well.”

Alex McLeish, “The feeling, to go and win at Wembley, is akin to winning the World Cup."

David Weir, “I’m looking forward to Scotland winning! I think England will be favorites because they have got really good players playing at probably a better level than the majority of our players. They’ll be favorites but like in any game you’ve always got a chance and I’m sure the Scotland team will be up for it.”
