UEFA Champions League Match Week 4 Results, Week 5 Tickets
After Tuesday’s and Wednesday's Week 4 Group Stage clashes, five titan clubs booked their tickets for the knockout stages of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League, as Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund emerged victorious. After suffering an embarrassing 4-1 loss to Barcelona at Camp Nou, Man City made them pay and got revenge by defeating Barcelona a 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Benfica won on Tuesday, beating Dynamo Kyiv 1-0, and Napoli earned a 1-1 draw with Besiktas.
Atletico Madrid’s superstar striker Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring against Rostov, giving his side the lead in the first half, and scored a late winner in the second half after Rostov’s Sardar Azmoun had tied things up. There was a brief controversy surrounding the goal, but the official overruled his linesman on an offside call - final score 2-1 in favor of Atletico:
Arsenal traveled to Bulgaria to defeat Ludogorets 3-2 as German international Mesut Ozil scored a spectacular goal in Group A to seal the victory for the Gunners who fell behind 2-0 early, but Granit Xhaka and Olivier Giroud equalized before half-time. Former Real Madrid star Ozil lifted the ball over goalkeeper Milan Borjan. Thomas Meunier scored a stunning volley to give Paris Saint Germain three points against FC Basel.
Bayern Munich traveled to the Netherlands for their match with PSV Eindhoven who took the lead with a goal from Santiago Arias. However a brace from match hero Robert Lewandowski gave the Bavarians the victory and a spot in the Champions League knockout stages.
The surprise outcome on Tuesday was the outcome of the exciting rematch between Manchester City and Barcelona. The Citizens won the clash at home 3-1. World-famous Barca superstar striker Lionel Messi opened the scoring giving Barca the lead. However inspired by Pep Guardiola’s choice Belgium international Kevin De Bruyne, City battled back and defeated the Catalans moving closer to earning a spot in the next stage. Ilkay Gundogan scored another brace, his second in two matches. De Buryne scored a superb free-kick goal. De Bruyne is City's has become a key player for Guardiola. After Celtic held Borussia Monchengladbach to a 1-1 draw, the Citizens now lead the Germans by three points. Napoli earned a draw at Besiktas. After the match, Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri mentioned his team's inability to finish chances:
“We need to concentrate on the performances more than the results right now, as after a difficult period we played two good games against Juventus and Besiktas,” said Sarri. “It leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, because we were in control, but unfortunately at the moment we are not turning our many chances into goals.” Benfica's victory against Dynamo Kyiv means the top three teams in Group B are separated by just a single point.
