Foiurty-six year old England interim manager Southgate named his first squad for England’s World Cup upcoming qualification matches against Malta on Saturday and Slovenia. Sourhgate has included Manchester United starlets Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford on his Three Lions side and has also Glen Johnson after a two-year absence. West Ham’s Michail Antonio who has yet to make his international debut will again be included. Harry Kane, Adam Lallana, and Nathaniel Clyne all miss out through injury. Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will continue in his role as England captain. Southgate was named temporary England manager after Big Sam Allardyce was terminated after being caught advising reporters posing as businessmen on how to ‘get around’ third party ownership rules. England face Malta and Slovenia after defeating Slovakia 1-0 in their opening qualification match, Allardyce’s only match in charge.

‘We’ve tried to keep some continuity from last month because my view would be that there are a lot of things that have been going right,’ said Southgate. ‘We’ve had a few people unavailable through injury like Harry Kane and Jack Butland, and we’ve lost a couple over the weekend in Danny Drinkwater, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne while Luke Shaw isn’t quite back fit yet. That’s had a bearing on the squad. There are obviously a couple of players that I’ve worked with in the Under-21s with Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, who we think are exciting young players who we wanted to put in this squad. It’s obviously been a difficult week in a number of ways, however we are in a position now where it’s important to get the squad named. I’m looking forward now to working with the players because it’s important that we build on the performance and the result against Slovakia.’

Joe Hart will continue as #1 at goal after his move to Torino.

Former Liverpool full back and Stoke defender Glen Johnson has not played for England since the 2014 World Cup. Liverpool has 54 caps, but has not competed for England since the World Cup loss to Uruguay in June 2014 and has only played in three Premier League matches this season following a seven-month layoff with injury.

Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne unavailable with a knee injury. Senion international Lingard has been rewarded for his encouraging start to the season at Manchester United. Arsenal forward Oxlade-Chamberlain is named after injury ruled him out of Euro 2016. Replacing Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford returns to the England squad after being left out by Sam Allardyce. Manchester United left back Luke Shaw is unavailable with a groin problem, and Danny Drinkwater is out due to injury. Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and Bournemouth’s Jack Wilshere were left out. West Ham forward Michail Antonio who was handed a shock first call-up by Allardyce, kept his place. Adam Lallana will miss out after suffering a groin injury in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Swansea. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was named after being left out by Allardyce. Michail Antonio has kept his place. Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson will have to wait for his debut international call-up.
