CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: ARSENAL 2-0 BASEL

Theo Walcott celebrates scoring opening goal for Arsenal against Basel

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: ARSENAL 2-0 BASEL

UEFA Champions League Group A: Arsenal 2-0 FC Basel

Arsenal 2-0 FC Basel

Walcott scored twice to give Arsenal a 2-0 home victory at the Emirates against Basel. Walcott has scored four goals in his last three games. England international Walcott opened the scoring early with a header at 7 minutes from an Alexis Sanchez assist, and hit again with help from Sanchez at 26 minutes putting the Gunners in first place in UEFA Champions League Group A.

The talent and passion of attacking trio Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott, who has five goals to his name this season overwhelmed Basel. However Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik held his own under the attack by the trio and made amazing saves to deny Sanchez and friends several times. Santi Cazorla made 94 passes.

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side are making notable challenges for both the EPL title and the Champions League are not unthinkable. Frenchman Wenger has been in charge of Arsenal for 20 years. HWenger will celebrate 20 years in charge at Arsenal on Saturday, a term in which the Gunners won three Premier League titles and six FA Cups. Arsenal reached the Champions League final in 2006, but got knocked out in the last 16 for the past six seasons. Wenger's contract runs out at the end of the 2016-17.

Sixty-six year old Wenger has been recently linked with the vacant England national team job after Big Sam Allardyce was terminated on Tuesday. Reportedly Wenger turned down an offer from the FA before Allardyce's appointment in July.

The Xhaka brothers, Granit and Taulant shared a hug at the final whistle and swapped shirts with each other. Granit of Arsenal and Basel's Taulant, faced each other again after crossing paths at Euro 2016. Granit represents Switzerland while Taulant plays for Albania.

Midfielder Bjarnason, part of the Iceland side that beat England at the Euro 2016 tournament in France, had a long-range effort tipped over by David Ospina.

After the match Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remarked that he wished his men scored more goals.

"I would say the game was of quality and the win was comfortable. The only regret was that we did not score enough tonight considering what we created. Overall, some excellent football,” said Wenger. "We need to have the desire to improve and not be happy with what you have. You have to have the urgency and focus high. We have not won anything and the target is to get stronger."

The Gunners are on a high roll of form, and hosted Basel in North London knowing they could not slip up if they want Group A top spot. As it turned out, the Gunners had a great night defeating Basel taking all three points.

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott got the game off to an electric start as he opened the scoring after seven minutes with a powerful header from a delightful Alexis Sanchez cross. Walcott doubled Arsenal’s lead 20 minutes later and could have had more with all the passion and attempts on goal. Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Alex Iwobi and Hector Bellerin all came close to scoring.

For the better part of the match, Basel seemed somewhat docile, but they had a second half revival and looked dangerous, but were not able to go on the scoreboard.

In the other Group A game, Paris Saint Germain came from behind to defeat Ludogorets 3-1. Arsenal and PSG are level at the top of the group on four points, Arsenal ahead on goal difference.

Arsenal aims to continue their excellent form when they travel to Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday, October 2nd.

The Gunners are unbeaten in eight matches in all competitions since a loss to Liverpool on the opening day of the England Premier League season. The Gunners soundly defeated old arch-rivals Chelsea 3-0 in the EPL last weekend, and continued to impress at the Emirates in this Group A tie with Basel.
