Thirty-year-old England forward and skipper Rooney played 52 minutes before leaving his testimonial to a standing ovation from the crowd of 58,597 supporters. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Former Paris Saint Germain strikerBottom of Form Zlatan Ibrahimovic played 65 minutes in his debut appearance for Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Wayne Rooney Testimonial match against Rooney’s former club Everton.

Man United defender Eric Bailly also made his home debut after joining the Red Devils from Spanish La Liga club Villarreal in a £30m summer transfer. Bailly was hired by Villarreal for £4.4m in January 2015. He featured in every match helping the Ivory Coast to win the Africa Cup of Nations. The twenty-two year old Ivory Coast international who transferred earlier this summer in a four-year contract, is the first Jose Mourinho signing for United.

"It is a dream come true to be joining Manchester United. To play football at the highest level is all I have ever wanted to do," said Bailly. "It is a confidence boost that a manager with so much experience of English football has trusted in me by making me his first signing. English football has a different style to Spanish football. It's more physical and more direct as well. I have always thought it would suit my style of football."

"Eric has the potential to become one of the best around," responded new United manager Mourinho.

"Tonight is a night myself and my family will always remember," said an emotional Rooney after the game.

All proceeds from the match will be donated to disadvantaged children and young people across the United Kingdom.

Rooney came onto the pitch with a guard of honor as he emerged from the tunnel with his three children Kai, Klay, and Kit to a red mosaic with the word 'Rooney' spelled out by fans in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand.

Attending the game were Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, and new England National Team manager Big Sam Allardyce. Moyes was Rooney’s manager at both Everton and at Man United.
