After a surprising Euro 2016 group stage featuring an expanded field of national teams, the Euro 2016 Round of 16 commenced on Saturday in France with a fantastic group of superstar footballers and Euros debutants on board to delight fans from all nations. Dark horses Poland and Switzerland kicked off the action followed by a battle of arch-rivals Wales and Northern Ireland, and ending with a clash between Croatia and Portugal. Poland’s Grzegorz Krychowiak sent them through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 in dramatic fashion with the winning on Saturday, netting the game-winning strike in a penalty shootout against Switzerland. The game finished 1-1 after 120 minutes. Poland winger Jakub Blaszczykowski netted the breakthrough goal of the match in the 39th minute.

On Sunday, hosts France defeated a ten-man Republic of Ireland side 2-1 to go through to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals with two France goals by Griezmann and the Republic of Ireland's only goal by Brady. World Champions Germany strengthened their status as favorites to win Euro 2016 as they out-played and out-classed Slovakia in Lille to set up a quarter-final against either Italy or Spain. Jerome Boateng gave Joachim Low’s side the lead with a superb 25-yard volley in the eighth minute before Mario Gomez drove in the second. Then Julian Draxler made it 3-0 after the break to send the Germans to the Last Eight. In the last match of the day, Eden Hazard inspired Belgium as they compeltely dominated Hungary to earn a spot in the quarter-finals.

England and Iceland clashed on Monday in Nice with the game looking like it was going England’s way as Captain Wayne Rooney opened the scoring with a superb penalty kick. However Iceland's

Gylfi Thor Sigurdsson soon scored the equalizer, and Iceland went on to dominate the game with another goal from Sigurdsson making the final score England 1-2 Iceland. England manager Roy Hodson resigned after the match.
