International Friendly: England 1 – 0 Portugal

After England defeated Portugal 1-0 at Wembley on Thursday, Red Rose boss Roy Hodson chose his final 23 man side to take to France for Engand’s opening Euro 2016 Group B clash on June 11th against Russia.

Superstar Manchester City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart kept a clean sheet for England and Chris Smalling scored the only goal of the match as England defeated Portugal 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in London on Thursday. Smalling jumped high and headed in a free kick late in the match to hand England a confidence-building victory against Portugal.

Smalling scored a late Wembley winner at 86 minutes as Hodson tried a three-man attack using superstar strikers Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy in The Red Rose’s final warm-up game before Euro 2016Hodgson picked his strongest XI to battle Portugal, and the FA declared Hodson’s entire 23 man side fit to go to France.

Jack Wilshere will go to France having played only 141 minutes for Premier League titans Arsenal this season. His skill and vision will be utilized no doubt in providing for the superb England strikers. After just over an hour, Hodgson Wilshere on to replace Milner; and Raheem Sterling came on for Vardy. Thanks to Wilshere, England seemed much better with him immediately getting on the ball to provide some inspiration.

It was very noticeable that Cristiano Ronaldo was rested for the game. The superstar Real Madrid striker would have given a challenge to Joe Hart and the rest of the England defense. When England battle Wales on June 16 in France, Gareth Bale will pose a massive goal-scoring threat to the England defense.

Early in the match, Harry Kane’s pass almost resulted in a goal for Rooney but Roo was offside. Hodgson said that of the 23 footballers he is taking to France, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane was the best set-piece kicker. Kane was hit on the side of his head with an outrageously high dangerous challenge that resulted in a 35th-minute red card dismissal for Bruno Alves. Luckily Kane was unharmed.

As a result of Alves dismissal, Portugal finished the match with 10 men. At 78 minutes, Hodgson sent on Daniel Sturridge for Kane and Adam Lallana for Rooney hoping to end the deadlock. Hodgson switched to a 4-3-3 formation and It paid off. Sterling then provided Smalling with a cross and he scored the winner as a result.

England Squad for Euro 2016

England manager Roy Hodgson has guaranteed Wayne Rooney a starting spot in his team for Euro 2016 saying Rooney can play anywhere in his team. Lethal center-forward Rooney is globally considered as one of the top versatile superstar strikers in the world.

Reportedly Hodgson will consider playing Rooney out wide in France if he chooses to play a 4-3-2-1 system, which would see Harry Kane play as a central striker.

“I’m not prepared to make this the Wayne Rooney show,” remarked Hodson when asked where he planned to play Rooney in the Euro 2016 tournament. “I’ve just said I’ve got nothing more to say on Wayne. He wants to play on the left? Then you must ask him about that, he hasn’t said to me that’s where he wants to play. You’re talking about the player who has played 111 games for England and scored 53 goals so perhaps his best position is anywhere on the field.”

“It’s a good problem to have, shoehorning in attacking players. I don’t think for a long time that I’ve had that, a lot of good attacking players to shoehorn so you won’t find me complaining about that,” added Hodgson. “You would find me complaining if we weren’t defending as a team, conceding lots of goals chances and every time we played we needed to score three to win a game so I’ve seen no evidence of that.”

After the win, England captain Wayne Rooney praised Roy Hodgson's decision to take five strikers to Euro 2016 saying he believes this England side has the potential to be the best ever. England’s leading goalscorer Rooney has been part of the England national side for every major tournament that England have qualified for since his debut at Euro 2004, where he stunned fans by scoring four goals. Though Rooney has never gone further than the quarter-final stage with England, (twice in Portugal in 2004 and the 2006 World Cup), he feels optimistic about Hodson’s side going through to the final. England have been drawn in Group B along with Russia, Slovakia and Wales.

'This is my 13th year playing for England,' said Rooney. 'And I honestly believe this squad has the potential to be the best one I have been in. 'I think people realize the quality we have in this squad and we hope to do well - we have to believe we can do well.'
