Manchester United defeat Crystal Palace to win FA Cup 2- 1

Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United side defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 to win the 2016 FA Cup.earning coveted silverware for his team and supporters.

Jesse Lingard scored an extra time stunner to win the silver trophy with a 10-man-United squad.

In 1990, 26 years ago a south London hero came off the bench to score a goal for Crystal Palace putting them ahead of Manchester United in the FA Cup Final, followed by a comeback and victory by Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man Utd. Louis van Gaal’s side performed a similar feat  at Wembley in the 2016 edition of the FA Cup Final Crystal Palace v Manchester United on Saturday.

One of Van Gaal’s young players, Jesse Lingard, delivered a game saving winning goal, 20 minutes into extra time, after United defender Chris Smalling was been sent off leaving only 10 men to finish the clash.

Lingard’s strike from Damien Delaney brought a glorious finish to Van Gaal’s 2015-16 season in charge.

‘In spite of being down to 10 players, we showed the spirit that we have shown on the way to the final,’ said Van Gaal. ‘We do fight to the end. When we proved that again in the final, you can be very proud as Manchester United manager and as a fan.’

Palace’s Jason Puncheon sent the ball from Joel Ward’s lofted pass past David De Gea at 78 minutes to open the FA Cup scoring. Alan Pardew broke into dad dancing on the touchline in celebration.

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew played for Palace in 1990.

‘I felt if we took the lead at that stage we would keep it, the way we had defended,’ lamented Pardew after the match.

Juan Mata provided the equalizer for Man United two minutes later when captain Wayne Rooney made a penetrating run from his midfield position charging into the box and crossed to Fellaini whose chest-down fell to Mata, who then struck the heartbreaker.

Man United teenager Marcus Rashford was explosive and energetic but unfortunately limped off at 72 minutes.
