UEFA Champions League april 27 update

Saul Niguez, Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid 1 - 0 Bayern Munich

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid went head to head with Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semi-finals tie at Estadio Vicente Calderon in Madrid.

Jan Oblak, Atletico Madrid

Key to Atletico Madrid winning the match was goalkeeper Jan Oblak who kept a clean sheet with some massive saves. Oblak reports that his side is fit and will be ready for a "tough" 2nd leg with Bayern Munich next week.

Atletico will take a 1-0 lead into the return match at the Allianz Arena.

Oblak was delighted to earn a clean sheet against the current Bundesliga leaders.

"We played to win. To score a goal and not concede. In the end we finished well, 1-0, but we know there will be a tough second game. Now we have La Liga on Saturday and on Tuesday against Bayern," Oblak told reporters.

Atletico are fighting to go through to their second Champions League final in three seasons.

Atletico Madrid’s boss Diego Simeone says the tie is still open.

"The first half was very close to what we wanted. In the second half they were better and got in behind but we felt comfortable, we defended well,” said Simeone. "It was a great piece of individual skill with lots of creativity, Saul Niguez is developing well which is great for us.”

"I think it's still an open tie, they will be playing at home next week with their fans behind them but we have the chance to get an away goal. It'll be a close game like today, we'll see who makes the most of their chances," added Simeone.

Atletico Madrid’s superstar striker Fernando Torres was happy with how his side performed.

"It was a fantastic night and I'm happy for all Atleticos. We've got the lead we wanted,” said Torres. "We kept fighting, that's what we do. Bayern have a level that few other teams have but we kept on doing our thing."

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola was not happy with how his side performed.

"Their goal is a brilliant goal, but it's our mistake. We kept standing off. I'm not happy with how we played”, commented Guardiola. "It was a good game overall, but we started badly. The goal was a consequence of our slow play."
