Capital One Cup Semi-finals: Stoke 0 – 1 FC Liverpool

Liverpool earned an advantage going into the second leg at Anfield despite manager Jurgen Klopp losing Philippe Countinho and Dejan Lovren to hamstring injuries.

Stoke City wore their famous red-and-white stripes, and Liverpool wore second-choice black. The same color combination worn when Liverpool recently defeated Southampton 6-1 in the last round evidently brought them luck and success again in tonight’s victory for the Reds.

The referee in tonight’s game was Anthony Taylor.

Liverpool’s midfielder, Jordan Ibe opened the scoring at 3 minutes making the score Stoke 0-1 Liverpool. And after that the remainder of the match was a quiet scoreless game giving Liverpool a clean sheet at full time.

Soon after the start of the match, Liverpool’s Lallana reached the byline, and then pulled back for Allen on the penalty spot. Allen miskicked and missed his mark by a mile. However the ball broke to Ibe who easily guided the ball past Butland into the bottom right corner for the game’s first and only goal.

West Ham recently defeated Liverpool in a Premiership game.

Before the match, both Jurgen Klopp and Mark Hughes were interviewed and asked about the current fitness and goals of their sides.

Liverpool’s new boss Jurgen Klopp declared, “I want my team to play better in each part of the game. More intensity: we cannot say we didn’t fight at West Ham but we had two big moments when we lost complete control of the game. I’m really satisfied with my line-up tonight, it’s a good team. I didn’t put Christian Benteke on the bench: I’m really satisfied with my line-up tonight, it’s a good team. I didn’t put Christian Benteke on the bench: I put Adam Lallana back in the team, and when I counted the players I had 11.”

Stoke City’s manager Mark Hughes replied, “We’re having a decent season. We’ve had games when we’ve been excellent, games where we’ve been disappointing, but our consistency encourages us. We’re hoping to play in semis every season. Liverpool are a good side but we’ve played top sides recently and done well, so we hope we can do it again. The onus is on us, we need to tap into the energy from the crowd and get on the front foot. We want to be in good shape going to Anfield. We’ll be in a decent position if we play well tonight.”

Hopefully some injured footballers will be back in form and available for Liverpool’s second leg tie with Stoke at home on Jan 26.

Substitute Jordon Ibe scored the tie’s only goal after coming on for the injured Philippe Coutinho. At the end of the match there were concerns that Kolo Toure was injured.
