Europa League Quarter Final Results

FC Rubin Kazan 3-2 FC Chelsea (agg: 5-4)

Chelsea's Fernando Torres emerged a hero as Chelsea advanced as 5-4 winners on aggregate to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals despite a 3-2 defeat in their quarter-final second leg with Rubin Kazan on a synthetic surface at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.  

Torres, previously scored twice in Chelsea' 3-1 first-leg win against Rubin Kazan. El Nino struck his 19th goal of the season after four minutes.

After Torres scored his third goal in three matches in Chelsea's 3-2 defeat by Rubin Kazan, Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez says the Spanish striker is "working hard and creating chances".

Torres expressed his relief at a result "good enough to go through".

Chelsea's goals were scored by Fernando Torres 5, and Victor Moses 55. Rubin's goals were scored by Ivan Marcano 51, Gokdeniz Karadeniz 62, and Bibras Natkho 75 (pen).

FC Basel 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur (agg: 4-4)

Tottenham Hotspur exited the Europa League competition in a penalties shootout at the quarter-final stage.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas says his team have been "heroes" in the Europa League after being knocked out by Swiss side Basel in a penalties shoot out. The game was 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes, replicating the first leg score and making it 4-4 on aggregate.

Newcastle 1-1 Benfica (agg: 2-4)

Newcastle's Papiss Cissé's effort set up a difficult finale. However Benfica held on against EPL club Newcastle United as a goal from Eduardo Salvio sealed a last-four place for Benfica for the second time in three years.
