2014 FIFA World Cup – UEFA Qualifying, Montenegro v England
Rooney celebrated after he scored a goal from a free kick during the FIFA 2014 World Cup Qualifier Group H match between San Marino and England at Serravalle Stadium on March 22, 2013 in Serravalle, San Marino.
Superstar Manchester United striker Rooney is sure to be the center of attention when he takes the field against Montenegro in England's upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier clash. The Three Lions striker was banned for the first two matches of Euro 2012 after kicking out at Montenegro's Miodrag Dzudovic in their qualifier match 17 months ago.
England defender Joleon Lescott says Wayne Rooney will stay cool in Montenegro as England look to claim top spot in Group H.
England's manager Roy Hodgson thinks Montenegro may attempt to set Rooney up in Tuesday night's qualifier.
"Wayne is older now. He is more experienced and mature," the England defender said. "We all are. I don't think there will be a problem.
"We want to be disciplined and professional. With the calibre of players in this squad, I don't think it will be a problem."
Hodgson's squad includes Rooney, Gerrard and Lescott along with Chris Smalling.
"Montenegro are a very organised team. They are tough to break down, but we are confident," Lescott said. "Winning breeds confidence. No disrespect to San Marino but we played well against them and we will hope to do the same on Tuesday.
"If we win on Tuesday that would give us a good run into the second half of the qualifying campaign."
Steven Gerrard has also called on England’s players to keep cool heads when they walk into the Montenegro “cauldron”.
