Chelsea's Ashley Cole May Play for Manchester United

Chelsea will offer 31-year-old Cole  a one-year extension - in line with the club's policy of giving season-by-season deals to players over 30.

Chelsea boss, Roberto Di Matteo has appealed to his bosses to keep Ashley Cole on the squad. Speculation has grown that Manchester United are planning to approach Cole who Di Matteo hails as "the best left back in the world".

Matteo is concerned that Cole and Frank Lampard may both leave in the same way as Didier Drogba.

"Negotiations are ongoing, but it needs to be sorted out. I would like him to stay with us. To me he is one of the best left-backs in the world. He is tactically superb both defensively and offensively and brings us a lot of attacking options. He is experienced, has stamina, everything," said Matteo.

In 2009, the England left-back signed a four-year contract with The Blues. Cole's decision to commit his future to the club followed the news of Chelsea club captain, John Terry, signing a new five-year contract. Reports valued Cole's new salary at £120,000 a week over four years. Terry's contract reportedly valued his salary at £170,000 a week.

Cole has been a key player since joining Chelsea from Arsenal in 2006.

"This is my fourth season here now and it feels as if we are getting more close and more of a family, and the spirit is better than I have ever seen it here. We are hungry to win, we didn't like losing last season and hopefully this season can be our year," Cole said after signing his new contract in 2009.
