Sir Alex Puts Premiership Title As No 1 Priority

“We want to recover the title. That’s our priority No.1 – to win the title back.”

Man Utd came in second on the Premiership table last season after having an eight-point advantage over the final six games of last season, denying United a record 20th league success.

Sir Alex Ferguson gave an interview at the MTN Football Invitational match between Ajax Cape Town and Manchester United at Cape Town Stadium on July 21, 2012 in Cape Town, South Africa.

One of the first things United manager Sir Alex Ferguson did when his side landed in South Africa for the first part of their extended pre-season series was to declare the Premier League ”priority number one”.

Sir Alex was asked what winning the Premier League title this campaign would mean to him.

“It would be special,” he replied. “If you look back over different periods, you see we recover.

“When Arsenal won the title from us in 1998 we went and won the Treble the next year. We accepted that challenge and did something about it. Then Chelsea came along and got off to a flyer in the league for the first two years. We changed our pre-season a little to make sure we got off to quick starts. That allowed us to get the title back.

“That’s happened three times in the last 14 or 15 years. Recovery is so important and the same applies this season. There’s not any difference. It will be special but no more special than in previous years.

“We want to recover the title. That’s our priority No1 – to win the title back.”

The arrival of Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa looks to be aimed at giving United additional creativity and Ferguson, despite being past his 70th birthday, retains the same combative spirit to meet any challenge head-on.

”I don’t feel it was such a bad season but when you look at it, we lost the league because at one point we were eight points in front,” said Antonio Valencia. ”Even then we only lost out by a few goals.

”It is always very tricky in football. You never know what is going to happen because all these other big teams; Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, have the same aim. But our expectations are exactly the same as they have always been, said Valencia”

Fergie is desperate to win one more Champions League crown with Manchester United before he retires.

And Man Utd boss,, Sir Alex is determined to reclaim domestic supremacy from mega-rich noisy neighbors, Manchester City and their manager Roberto Mancini.

“We want to recover the title,” said Ferguson. “The title has been an important part of the history of our club over the last 20 years. We either win the title or come second.

“We have to recover, as we’ve done many times, and that’s our target this year. Priority No.1 is to win the title back.

“It would be special to do it. If you look back over different periods, you can see how well we recover.
