David Beckham Will Have Opening Ceremony Role for London Olympics

Beckham failed to make the 2012 Olympic soccer squad for Great Britain, howerer he confirmed he will have a role in Friday's glittering opening ceremony.

''It is some kind of role in the opening ceremony, which I am honored to be involved in because obviously I was involved in the start process with this seven years ago,'' Beckham said. ''And for Sebastian Coe to have kept me involved, I'm very proud of that.''

In keeping with the national ''save the surprise'' campaign, Beckham wouldn't divulge any details about his role.

The L.A. Galaxy midfielder, who has also played for Real Madrid and Manchester United, has played a pivotal role in bringing the Games to London.

Beckham was on hand to welcome the Olympic torch to the English capital from Athens before it embarked on a 70-day tour around the UK but has ruled out the possibility of lighting the flame inside the Stadium, saying that honor should be bestowed upon a person who has competed at the Games.
