Didier Drogba Delivers FC Chelsea's First European Cup 2012

UEFA man of the match, Chelsea's Didier Drogba, celebrated after delivering the UEFA Champions League Final victory match between FC Bayern Muenchen and Chelsea at the Fussball Arena Munchen on May 19, 2012 in Munich, Germany.

Russian billionare Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea in 2003. And interim boss Roberto di Matteo replaced the fired Andrés Villas-Boas becoming the eighth man to manage Chelsea since the ambitious Abramovich took over.

“It's a massive game for the club, a game that can decide the history of our football club,” said Di Matteo said before Saturday’s final.

Even with four suspended Chelsea regulars, the German superpower’s fifth European title was denied by Didier Drogba, Di Matteo and the Chelsea squad.

The 34-year-old Drogba who was rumored to be on his way out of Chelsea after eight seasons, sent Saturday’s clash into overtime with a thumping 88th-minute header and the score at 1-1.

Drogba calmly beat Bayern’s Manuel Neuer and sealed the first European Cup, 4-3 on penalties.

Drogba is the only man to have scored in four FA Cup finals, and now he’s the man who delivered the Champions League to Chelsea as he personally handed the European Cup to Abramovich during the postgame trophy presentation in Munich.

“For a lot of their players, this will be their last chance to win the Champions League. They’re all getting a bit older, with all respect,” Bayern’s Robben said before the game. “People say their team has not evolved, and that may be a failure, but it could also be a strength. A lot of their players have been at the club for a long time, which can make them strong.”

When asked to comment about Chelsea's previous Champions League final in Moscow, Drogba refused.

“It’s not good to speak about the past because we have a great moment here,” he said.

“That’s what we’ve been doing for years and years and years,” Drogba said during the chaotic moments that followed his clinching penalty. “That’s the spirit we have. I’ve been here for eight years, but these guys, they show us the way. When you’re a Chelsea player, never give up. Never give up until the end.”
