Thomas also received an invitation from the Wolves to sit in on the club’s training.

Nine-year-old Jamie Thomas suffered the injury prior to United kicking off against Wolves at Molineux in central England on Sunday. Thomas was attending his first live match when he was struck by one of Rooney’s practice shots while sitting in the front row behind the goal.

“The players were warming up and Rooney and Hernandez were taking a few shots,” Thomas’ father, Andy Thomas.

“Rooney missed one and it was coming straight towards Jamie so he put out his hands to stop it hitting him and it broke his wrist.”

After the match, Rooney apologised to Jamie Thomas.

“I want to apologise to Jamie Thomas, I have arranged for a letter and a signed shirt to be sent to his home address #getwellsoon,” Rooney wrote on his Twitter account Thursday.

Andy Thomas said he did not initially realize the severity of his son’s injury.

“At first we thought it was just bruising but Jamie wasn’t enjoying the game so we went to first aid. We ended up missing most of the second half.”
