David de Gea Steps Up Helping Man Utd Move To Top

Manchester United On Top of Premier League

Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United Manager

Despite Wayne Rooney's outstanding outstanding goal-scoring this campaign, United have netted one fewer goal in the Premier League than Man City.

With 12 titles already to his name, Sir Alex Ferguson remains confident that his side's experience will carry them through to victory and another trophy in the intense challenge of the closing weeks of the 2012 season. Ferguson's side also face the challenge of overturning a 3-2 first-leg deficit against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League on Thursday.

Sir Alex commented about the rest of United's 2011-12 season ...

"I hope it is a significant day. I don't mind being top of the league at this stage. I think we've clawed it back from seven points behind to one point ahead.

United players like Paul Scholes, Ashley Young, Chicharito, and David de Gea have stepped up to the challenge and upped their game.

"We've turned it around and credit to the players for that. They have shown great resilience and determination. We had a period of injuries but we have come through that now. We will keep on playing. It is good to see that type of temperament."

Through the current 2011-12 campaign, United has missed some opportunities to win matches.

“We created a lot of chances and missed them," Fergie said. "It becomes worrying because you need the second one to take the pressure off you. Fortunately we got the second goal and we still missed chances after that, but we kept our drive for the whole game, which was good. "The players didn’t stop; they tried to score from every attacking situation, which is always pleasing.”
