Despite the drizzle, fans were thrilled to watch Manchester United lead 3-0 after an excitying first half in which Rooney headed two goals, Danny Welbeck a third and Man City captain Vincent Kompany was sent off.

Manchester United defeated a 10-man Manchester City squad in Sunday's Third Round FA Cup Manchester Derby and ousted the defending champions from the FA Cup competition.

“We were 3-0 up at halftime and we thought we were through and they took our foot off the pedal,” said Sir Alex Ferguson. “It was a careless performance in the second half and we should have been home and dry.”

Paul Scholes come out of retirement to play in the derby.

“We didn’t find out until we got to the dressing room,” Rooney said. “It gave everyone a lift. He’s a fantastic player.”

The third-round FA Cup victory gave United redemption after City beat them 6-1 in the Premier League this season and after last season’s FA Cup semifinals loss to City.

The loss was Premier League leaders City's first home defeat since December 2010.

United will be joined in the fourth round by Chelsea, Sunderland and Sheffield. Chelsea beat Portsmouth 4-0 scoring all four goals in the second half.

Sunderland won 2-0 at Peterborough; and Sheffield Wednesday beat West Ham 1-0.
