Wayne Rooney Talks About His Two-Month Ban

“I’ll never recover from being banned for the FA Cup semi-final, which we lost. I can never get that back,” said Rooney.

“I’m sorry I did it. I didn’t mean it, I didn’t aim it at anyone.

“It was just an emotion. You have to be conscious of the cameras but sometimes you just can’t stop yourself. But the FA banned me.”

Rooney mused about United's loss to FC Barcelona in the Champions League Final.

“We weren’t there to make the numbers up.” Rooney said. “We know Barcelona are a fantastic team, but we thought we could hurt them.

“They are a special team and that’s the level we want to be at. We need to up our level to be there.

“I’m sure the manager knows that and he’ll be looking at what he needs to do to get us at that level.

“But I’ve watched the game back and Barcelona are incredible. You’ve got to hold your hands up. They were by far the better team.”

Rooney remarked about Barcelona superstar forward Lionel Messi.

“Messi is the best player ever,” said Rooney. “What we’ve seen over the last two or three years is incredible. It will be difficult to see that again.

“Messi wins them the games, but Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta destroy the opposition’s legs.

"You have to work so hard to get near to them and it’s harder than in any other game. Then Messi kills you off!”
