Denmark v England: Jack Wilshire to Debut

Jack Wilshire Celebrates

Midfielder Wilshere has extraordinary talent and maturity for his age and experience.

"His maturity is light years ahead of his age," says Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about Wilshire.

It is a week before the Champions League restarts after its winter break. The last England game was four months ago.

Fabio Capello has put together a team of players together with hopes of victory for England.

England Squad

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), David Stockdale (Fulham), Ben Foster (Birmingham)

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Bolton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Michael Dawson (Spurs), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Kyle Walker (Spurs)

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Stewart Downing (Aston Villa), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Scott Parker (West Ham), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Aston Villa)

Strikers: Peter Crouch (Spurs), Darren Bent (Aston Villa), Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Jermain Defoe (Spurs), Wayne Rooney (Manchester Utd)

Capello has stuck to his favoured 4-4-2 formation in the three Euro 2012 qualifiers England have played, against Bulgaria, Montenegro and Switzerland, in the two friendlies against Hungary and France he’s tried both 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1, with Wayne Rooney fielded as the lone forward, rather than deployed just off a central striker.

With Andy Carroll out injured, the main focus will be England’s midfield and Jack Wilshere, who will make his international debut for England.

Wilshire played the final seven minutes against Hungary. “If Wilshere is fit, he will play,” Capello confirmed.

“Hargreaves played this position very, very well, every game,” Capello said. “But after the knee problem, he was never back. I put different players in there, but they never played in this position (for their clubs) – I saw Wilshere play every game in this position.”

For Arsenal, Wilshere plays in a ‘double pivot’ alongside Alex Song. He and Song take turns going forward.

Arsene Wenger stated, "I believe he is stronger than last year, physically. The few months he played at Bolton has given him something…I was not convinced that at the start of this season, Wilshere could be a central midfielder, defensively.” His positioning at the centre of the Arsenal side indicates Wenger’s faith in his ability without the ball.

“He wins back the ball, he passes, he turns, dribbles, goes and shoots” – but the Italian’s need for a holding midfielder may mean that for his country, Wilshere plays a deeper position, in the ‘Claude Makelele role’. “Wilshere is better technically than Makelele,” Capello claims. “Slower than Makelele, but when he receives the ball he is more dangerous,” said Capello.

Capello will probably deploy a double pivot tonight - however Wilshere’s partner is uncertain – either Barry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard or Scott Parker, with Lampard alongside Wilshere and Gerrard higher up the pitch.

“His maturity is light years ahead of his age,” says Wenger.
