Darren Bent - Bent On Set New Goal Record for Premier League

Darren Bent - Goal Poacher

The striker has set goals of surpassing Wayne Rooney and Didier Drogba as top goal scorer in the Premier League - and to fire Villa up in the process.

In Bent's debut for Aston Villa he scored the winning goal in what he describes as a "mouth-watering" clash with Manchester City. Bent has lifted Villa three points above the drop zone with his first strike for the side.

Bent’s debut winning shot against Man City at Villa Park moved him level with Rooney and Drogba on 82 Premier goals since the summer of 2005.

“It would be nice to stay there or go past them to be honest,” said Bent.

“To be fair, when you play with these players week in and week out, it must feel like Christmas because the ball is in the opposition box every couple of minutes. I’m looking forward to it, I can’t wait.”

“Obviously Man City played really well, you can’t hide from that fact but, to be fair, as a striker, you want those kind of tap-ins,” said Bent.

“I’ve mentioned the creativity in the team and Ashley Young has had a shot which Joe Hart made a great save from. It is about reacting at the end of the day and I managed to do that and put the ball into the net. But it is only the start of it, to be honest. We’ve got quite a lot of games coming up. We need to start kicking up the league but I was delighted with the team performance. It was nice to get a goal.”

When asked about Villa management Bent said, “The manager and Gary said ‘We’ve not bought you to change the way you play, we bought you to do what you do, to be a threat and to sniff out chances’ and luckily one fell to me.

“My target before this game was one. They say the first goal is the most difficult, but I just want to keep playing well for Villa.

“I’ve loved every minute I’ve been here and hopefully there will be many more victories and performances like this.

“Will I get goals here? I hope so. It is just about me working hard in training, as I do every day, and working on my finishing.

"Gerard is a top, top manager and Gary was a top, top player," Bent said. "I am looking forward to working with them both. It's those kind of influences that made the decision easy to come to Villa.''
