Van Persie Scores First Hat Trick - Arsenal 3-0 Wigan

Robin van Persie Celebrates

Arsenal 3-0 Wigan

Wenger also had praise for the efforts of the whole team.

Arsenal moved up into second with their 3-0 defeat of Wigan on Saturday. Robin van Persie scored his first hat trick - and all three goals - at 21, 58, and 85 minutes.

Van Persie, Samir Nasri, Alex Song, Theo Walcott, and Fabregas were stunning and only prevented from scoring twice as many goals by the feats of Wigan's goalkeeper, Al Habsi.

Fabregas and Van Persie returned to the starting line-up fit and well-rested after being on the bench for Arsenal's FA Cup win over Leeds.

Wigan's Gary Caldwell was dismissed for bringing down Fabregas in the box. It was the first penalty Wigan have conceded in the league this season, however Van Persie failed to convert.

Arsene Wenger's side is clearly showing intent to secure for silverware on four fronts - and with a supportive team and Van Persie fit and scoring, they may win their first trophy since 2005.

Arsenal's victory puts them in second place behind Manchester United and moves them above third place Manchester City in the Premiership.

On the other hand, Wigan is forced to continue their fight against relegation in their next game against Aston Villa - recently impowered by their expensive, pedigree transfer, Darren Bent.

Bent is the most expensive English player in history (cumlitive £53m).
