Merseyside Derby – Liverpool 2-2 Everton

A penalty shot by Dirk Kuyt saved the derby for Liverpool, ending Kenny Dalglish’s emotional Anfield homecoming in a 2-2 draw.

Liverpool’s new manager Kenny Dalglish has been on board for three matches to date – he’s now lost two and drawn one in all competitions .

Both Liverpool and Everton are in danger of dropping down a division. However Dalglish may make a significant difference to the team he inherited from Roy Hodgson, and turn things around.

Sunday’s Liverpool city derby match wraped up another year of Merseyside derbies with Everton winning the first in October at Goodison Park and Sunday’s result ending all square.

Goals for the Liverpool Reds came from Meireles and Kuyt while Everton’s two goals came from Beckford and Sylvain Distin.

Dalglish was full of praise for his players.

“After five minutes of the second half we were 2-1 down but the players attitude and desire to get back in the game was really something,” said Dalglish.

“It was fantastic. We could have been more than one up but we were really pleased with the way we played and that’s great credit to the players who have had to adjust to the new ways of playing and training.”
