Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson, Managerial Awards and Honors

Going into the second-half of the 2011-2012 season, Manchester United is in second place just two points behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. Winning the league trophy would be another cap in the excellent career of Sir Alex Ferguson, Man Utd boss.

On 5 November 2011, the Old Trafford North Stand was officially renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand in honour of his 25 years as manager of Manchester United. He has won 48 trophies as a manager, making him the most successful British football manager in history.

Sir Alex Ferguson was made an Inaugural Inductee of the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002 in recognition of his impact on the English game as a manager. In 2003, Ferguson became an inaugural recipient of the FA Coaching Diploma, awarded to all coaches who had at least 10 years’ experience of being a manager or head coach.

Sir Alex is the Vice-President of the National Football Museum, and a member of the Executive Committee of the League Managers Association.

Fergie is the only manager to win the top league honours, and the ‘Double’, North and South of the England–Scotland border – winning the Premier League with Manchester United, and the Scottish Premier Division with Aberdeen, and the last manager to win the Scottish championship with a non Old Firm team in the 1984–85 season with Aberdeen.

Ferguson is the only manager in English football to have managed to finish in the top three league places in 20 consecutive seasons, since the 1991–92 season.

Rooney Shines For Manchester United - Man Utd Tickets

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United

Wayne Rooney #2 Goalscorer in Premier League

Wayne Rooney says it was a 'dream come true' to net two rapid goals in Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Roo scored his 16th and 17th Premier League goals of the campaign to help Sir Alex Ferguson's club return to the top of the table, even if it was for 24 hours only.

Man Utd superstar striker, Wayne Rooney (@ 17 goals) is catching up to Arsenal's Robin Van Persie (@ 22 goals) as top Premier League goalscorer - as Manchester United ( 58 points) moves in on Manchester City (60 points) at the top of the table in the Premiership title race.

"It's a great feeling to score two goals against Liverpool at Old Trafford," said Rooney. "It obviously helped us win the game and get three points which is something that I had dreamed about as a young boy.

"I think Liverpool came to frustrate us by putting men behind the ball, they did that to a certain extent but we kept pushing and opened them up a couple of times.

"We maybe should have done better in front of goal so when we went in to half time at 0-0, we knew we had to concentrate and come out quickly. We managed to do that and get the two goals early on. It was a great lift for us. It killed the game off a little bit and we felt we were in control."

Liverpool's Luis Suarez grabbed a consolation in the last ten minutes remaining.

"They had a little bit more of possession but they didn't really trouble us to be honest," Rooney continued. "They hit a few long balls into the box which we dealt with quite well and thankfully we saw the game out.

"Anything can happen in these games. Once they got the goal we knew we had to see the game out and we retreated a little bit to get men behind the ball and try to hit them on the counter attack. Thankfully, we managed to see it out and get the three points."

Twenty-four year old Wayne Rooney was born October 24, 1985. Rooney competes for Manchester United in the Premier League and for the England National Team in World Cup soccer. Rooney is a forward at 5'10" and 172 pounds.

MAN UTD TIED ON TOP OF ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP

Manchester United lost the FA Cup Fourth Round match to Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield on January 28, 2012 in Liverpool, England.

Then Man United defeated Stoke 2-0 and Man City lost at Everton, bringing United level on points at the top of the English Premiership with City.

“It’s been a good night,”  said Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson.

“But it’s still only the last day in January. I always see March as the important month and we’ve got City away in April.”

Ferguson added that he thought his depleted team had been “terrific” in defeating Stoke. “We kept our composure and were patient,” he said.

“OK, we won with two penalties, but the manner in which we played our football was the main thing.”

Ferguson remarked he had suffered a “right nightmare” with goalkeepers Anders Lindegaard and David De Gea both being injured in the same training session which led to a league debut for 21-year-old Ben Amos.

“We are hopeful Wayne Rooney and Nani and Ashley Young might be back for Sunday,” he said.

Ferguson has signed 19-year-old defender Frederic Veseli who was at Old Trafford having completed his switch from City.

“United have a long history of younger players coming through and hopefully I can follow and do the same,” he said.

Manchester United clash with rivals FC Chelsea this weekend.

Manchester Derby: Manchester United v Manchester City - Tickets

2011 Manchester Derby: Man Utd 1-6 Man City

In front of a sold-out stadium of fans from around the workd, Manchester City earned a shocking 6-1 defeat of their arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 23rd, 2011.

After a somewhat slow start, Man City took the lead after 22 minutes with a goal from 21-year old Italian Mario Balotelli. The midfielder marked the goal with humor by lifting his outer shirt to reveal another blue shirt saying, “Why Always Me?”

City was ahead 1-0 at half-time.

Mario Balotelli, Manchester City

Star of the match, Balotelli struck twice. Balotelli also won the free-kick which led to a red card for United defender Jonny Evans leaving United with only ten men. Two goals came from late sub Edin Dzeko.  And Sergio Aguero and David Silva each added to the tally.

City boss, Roberto Mancini took off Balotelli with 20 minutes remaining and brought in Edin Dzeko.

City upped their tempo and struck three times after the 88th minute cementing their victory that lifted them five points ahead of United at the top of the Premier League table.

Darren Fletcher scored United’s only goal 10 minutes from time.

City delivered United’s first home defeat since April 2010 – and ended United’s run of 19 consecutive home league wins.

Sir Alex Ferguson said later that the stunning defeat to Manchester City was shocking to him.

United played the majority of the second half with ten men after the dismissal of Jonny Evans.

‘It was out worst ever day. It’s the worst result in my history, ever. Even as a player I don’t think I ever lost 6-1’.

‘I thought with the experience we’ve got – Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra – they would defend more but we just kept attacking. Sometimes there has to be common sense about it’.

Roberto Mancini, City manager, also commented after the match.

“This is only one game. I still think United are one yard above us, still,” said Mancini. “I think we can only change this after we win the title in the end.

“After, maybe it will be different, but now United are better than us.”

The 161st derby, a Premier League fixture, took place on 23 October 2011 at Old Trafford. City’s victory equalized the biggest win in the derby’s history, which City also won at Old Trafford in 1926.

Manchester United won the 2010-11 Premier League Championship and Manchester City earned the 2010-11 FA Cup Trophy.

Both clubs qualified for the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League.

The Manchester Derby is a historic clash between Manchester City and Manchester United. The local derby centres on the City of Manchester and Greater Manchester. Only four miles separate the clubs with City based in east Manchester at the City of Manchester Stadium and United south west of Manchester at Old Trafford Stadium in Trafford.

To date, Manchester United has recorded the most Derby wins - 67, and Ryan Giggs has played in the most Derbies – 34.

As of 23 October 2011, there have been 161 competitive meetings between the teams. United have won 67 and City 44, the remaining 50 games finishing as draws.

The last meeting, the 161st derby, was a Premier League fixture on 23 October 2011 at Old Trafford. City won 6-1, equalling the biggest win in the derby’s history, which City also won 6-1 at Old Trafford in 1926.

Wayne Rooney Scores Supergoal in Manchester Derby, February 2011

Man United won the previous Manchester Derby with a spectacular goal from Wayne Rooney.

Rooney’s 78th minute winner – a powerful acrobatic effort that flashed past Joe Hart on its way home - was Rooney’s best ever goal in his football career.

“As soon as I hit it, I knew it was in, said Rooney. “It’s definitely the best goal I’ve scored.”

Fergie Talks About "The Big Six"

Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United Manager

Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, believes the upcoming 2011-12 season will be his most challenging campaign ever, calling it a “six-horse race.”

In the past, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have challenged each other for the Premier League championship.

The Big Four along with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have made tremendous steps forward.  Man City beat Arsenal to earn third place last season.

Arsenal may loose top stars Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri,

Liverpool have not won the league since 1990, but with King Kenny Dalglish as new boss, Bergie  will not underestimate Liverpool.

‘We used to talk about a top four, with ourselves, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool,’ he said. ‘You can’t say that any more.Manchester City have definitely come into the frame. They have a buying power better than the rest of us.

‘Maybe having the run in the European Cup just stretched Tottenham too much last season and they ended up being out of the top four.

‘But you look at those teams and say any one of them could win the league.’
