Poland automatically qualified for the tournament as co-host, but hasn’t played a competitive match since 2010 World Cup qualifying. Poland’s debut at the European Championship four years ago ended in disappointment with zero wins in three games. Since then Poland hired a new coach, revamped much of the squad and featured players who have found success in one of Europe’s toughest leagues.
.
As co-host of Euro 2012, Poland is hoping the changes make a difference when they take on Russia, Greece and the Czech Republic in Group A.
.
”It is our goal to advance from the group and I am convinced we can do it,” Poland coach Franciszek Smuda said. ”But this is a group that you can be wrong about. Russia is an excellent team. I think they are the favorites to advance from our group. Greece also is very good.”
”Last year showed that we can play with strong opponents,” said Smuda.
”OK, so we didn’t win, but we were good to watch. Against Germany, France, and Portugal we fought as equals despite the fact that we don’t have a team that has played with that lineup at a tournament and hasn’t played against those sorts of opponents.
”That’s why I’m optimistic and why Poles are optimistic.”
”Taking over this post, I thought that you could easily find 11 players, and good players at that. But it turns out that it’s actually very hard to find 11 good players,” he said. ”We aren’t in a situation like the Germans are right now, where we could put together three national teams from our roster. We can only put together one, and we have to pray to God that we don’t have any injuries.”
What Smuda can draw on are three top-class players – the Borussia Dortmund trio of Robert Lewandowski, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek, as well as Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
Poland’s attack will be centered on the 23-year-old Lewandowski, who is coming off a stellar campaign for Dortmund. Lewandowski scored 22 goals in 34 matches, finishing the 2011-12 campaign third best in the league.
”We are playing at home and we will do our best to advance from the group and it will be a great success for these boys,”

Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United
Euro 2012 – England National Team Update
Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson was recently asked who on his squad should be included in the England National Team squad for Euro 2012.
Fergie praised Rio Ferdinand’s “fantastic season”, remarking he is fit to be included in the Euro 2012 England national team squad.
“Experience is going to be important” said Ferguson.
Recently named England boss Roy Hodgson has said he will speak to Ferdinand about being involved with England.
Following allegations that England team-mate John Terry racially abused Ferdinand’s brother and QPR defender Anton, Ferdinand said he wanted to “concentrate on playing for Manchester United.”
Ferdinand has featured 36 times for United this season.
“He has done fantastic this season and has coped very well,” Ferguson said.
Ferguson added he thought that fellow United defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling should be part of the England squad as well.
Ferguson backs Hodgson to do a good job for England.
“Roy, as everyone has pointed out, has fantastic experience,” Ferguson said. “He is a good man and has the right profile for the job in every respect.
“I have always said that for that England job, you need to be in your 60s.
“Do you really need club football when, at that age, you could be managing your national team?
“I always said Jock Stein was the perfect age for managing Scotland. He had all that experience of managing Celtic. Roy has all that experience behind him.”
Poland and Ukraine will host the European Championships for the first time in 2012, welcoming 14 other teams and football fans from across the continent.
World champions Spain will defend the title won in Austria and Switzerland four years ago, when Chelsea striker Fernando Torres scored the only goal of the final against Germany.
The Germans, who like Spain went undefeated in winning the tournament in 1996, will also be back as Joachim Low’s team seek a fourth title in the competition’s 52-year history.

Roy Hodson, Manager England National Team and David Bernstein, FA Chairman
Euro 2012 Update: Roy Hodson Named England Manager
Roy Hodson signed a four-year deal today as manager of the England National Team. Hodgson has managed 18 teams - including three national sides - during his 36-year coaching career.
"It is a very proud day for me, I'm a very happy man to be offered the chance to manage my country," he said.
"I'm looking forward to the task ahead. Everyone knows it is not an easy one but I'm hoping that everyone, fans and supporters will get behind the team.
"It's the team that counts, they go out and win football matches. What I'll do is try to make sure the team is well prepared for the challenge ahead. I'm really looking forward to it."

Hodson, the 64-year-old West Brom boss was the unanimous choice of a four-man selection panel. Football Association chairman David Bernstein said Hodgson was earmarked as the preferred candidate a month ago. He was the only manager approached by the FA about the job despite speculation in the media linking Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp with the vacancy after Fabio Capello quit in February.

Wayne Rooney is suspended for the first two games of Euro 2012, but Hodgson intends to take the Manchester United superstar striker with him to Poland and Ukraine.
"I'm looking forward very much to Wayne Rooney coming to the Euros with us and his contribution, albeit that he can't play the first two games," he said.
Hodgson will have to gain the support of England players, including Wayne Rooney, John Terry, Gary Cahill, Steven Gerrard, and Rio Ferdinand.
"Every coach has got to win over the players. It's not the first time I've stepped into a group I don't know but my CV suggests I've succeeded fairly well with that," said the former Fulham, Liverpool and Inter Milan manager.
"Every coach taking a new job needs to make certain they get the players on side, united behind the cause. We're England, the England football team. We interest a lot of people. I have a lot of responsibility but then so do the players."
Harry Redknapp left a congratulatory phone message for Roy.
"I've got great respect for Harry. He sent me a voicemail message that I will reply to. He's been very gracious," said Hodgson. "I hope we will remain friends. We've unwittingly become rivals but it won't affect our relationship. He's dealt with it well in all his interviews and I appreciate it."
Roy Hodgson, born 9 August 1947),is an English former footballer, who is the current manager of West Bromwich Albion and the new boss of the England national team.
Hodson intends to play to win at Euro 2012.
"I think England always have to go into tournaments to win them because we are a major football nation. The players would be disappointed if we didn't expect less of them than trying to win the tournament. It's always a big job to win people over and it's important first of all to have the chance."

Stuart Pearce, Great Britain Team Olympics 2012 Manager
Stuart Pearce Chooses 80-Man Provisional Great Britain Olympic Team Squad
An 80-man provisional squad that reportedly includes Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs, has been drawn up by Stuart Pearce who is set to lead Team Great Britain at the Summer Olympics this year.
The FA has firmly stated that any player who travels with the England National Team to Euro 2012 this summer may not be selected for Team GB at the Olympics as well.
A statement on the FA's website read: "Any player who travels to Euro 2012 with England will not be considered for the Olympic GB Team.
"This position has not changed.
"The original long list of players was reduced to 80 players last week and a final 18-man squad will be announced very soon, after the Euro squad is selected in May, to assist player and clubs with their planning for next season.
"The list of 80 players does include players who are regulars in the England squad and they remain on the Team GB list until England's Euro 2012 squad is finalised.
"If they are selected for Poland and Ukraine, they will not be available for the Olympics."
Sir Alex Ferguson has previously stated that the selection policy is 'ridiculous' after being told Wayne Rooney, who will feature for England in June despite a two-game ban, was believed to be among 10 Manchester United players on the Team GB shortlist selected by Pearce.

Stuart Pearce, England National Team Manager & Great Britain Olympic Coach
Stuart Pearce England National Team Caretaker Boss
The FA has not yet found a replacement for Fabio Capello to take over the significant position as England National Team Manager for the upcoming EURO 2012 games in Poland and the Ukraine that begin in June.
Until the FA decides, Olympic and under-21 coach Stuart Pearce will take the helm as caretaker boss.
Great Britain's national team has failed to win a major championship since 1966. So fans have put pressure on the FA to choose a manager that is capable of leading England to EURO 2012 silverware.
“He will not definitely be English, but clearly there is a preference for an Englishman or a British person,” said a FA spokesperson.
“In the end we want the best person so I’m certainly not prepared to rule out anything at this stage.”
Tottenham Hotspur coach Harry Redknapp is talked about as being a top choice among fans.
Redknapp was cleared of charges of tax evasion in a high-profile criminal court case in 2011. Redknapp grew up in East London.
“I don’t know anything about the England job, I’ve not thought about it. I’ve got a job to do. Tottenham is my focus,” said Redknapp when asked if he were interested the taking the position of England boss.
If Redknapp does take the job, he might well do so with some trepidation. The intense press scrutiny endured by the England manager famously led sportswriters to dub the role “the impossible job.” No manager has passed the semifinals since Alf Ramsey led his “wingless wonders” to glory against West Germany in 1966. Since then, a string of managers has endured public scorn and the wrath of the British media in failing to deliver the desired result.

Fabio Capello abruptly quit his position as team manager, and reportedly a majority of England fans were relieved. Capello had long been criticized by England's devoted fans due to the fact that he failed to take the team further than the second round at the last World Cup.
In addition, Capello was paid $9.5 million per annum for coaching twelve+ matches a year, and his ability to communicate in English was poor.
Capello resigned as a result of his dispute with the Football Association, over whether team captain John Terry should be stripped of his arm band pending a trial set for July over allegations of racist remarks.
Capello declared he “absolutely” disagreed with his bosses’ decision to strip Terry of his captaincy pending his trial for racial abuse of another player, the Queens Park Rangers’ Anton Ferdinand, saying, “I have spoken to the chairman and I have said that in my opinion one cannot be punished until it is official and the court—a non-sport court, a civil court—had made a decision to decide if John Terry has done what he is accused of.”
A statement announcing Capello’s departure was issued shortly after his hour-long meeting with FA kingpins.
Capello stated, “I would like to thank all players, staff and Football Association for the professionalism they have shown during my years as manager of the English national team.”
The England manager's job comes under intense press scrutiny, often including revelations about the incumbent's private life. Due to the high level of expectation of both the public and media the role has been described as "the impossible job"second only to the job as Britain's Prime Minister.
