Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates scoring his sides first goal with Sergio Ramos during the UEFA Champions League Final between Juventus and Real Madrid at National Stadium of Wales on June 3, 2017 in Cardiff, Wales.

Real Madrid defeat Juventus to be named “Kings of Europe”

2016-17 Champions League Final Match Report

Real Madrid 4-1 Juventus

Real Madrid goals: Cristiano Ronaldo (20’min, 63’min); Casemiro (61’min), Asensio (90’min)

Juventus goals: Mandzukic (27’min); Cuadrado (Dismissed at 83’min)

Real Madrid superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for his giant Spanish La Liga club as Real Madrid retained the Champions League trophy they won last season in grand style by overwhelming titan Italian Serie A side Juventus in Cardiff, Wales. The victory was Real Madrid’s 12th in the prestigious European tournament and an amazing 3rd in 4 seasons. Ronaldo has now scored in three different Champions League finals as he again earned his match-winner reputation.

Ronaldo opened the scoring for Real Madrid as he swept in Dani Carvajal's pass at 20 minutes, before Juve’s Mario Mandzukic leveled, sending a sublime overhead kick past Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas. After the break, Real Madrid restored their lead through Casemiro's deflected shot making the score 2-1 before Ronaldo scored at the near post from a cross by Luka Modric to make it 3-1 as Real pulled well ahead of Juventus.

Juve sub Juan Cuadrado was sent off for a second caution after a clash with Sergio Ramos before Los Blancos sub Marco Asensio delivered a precise finish in the last minute. Final score Real Madrid 4-1 Juventus. Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has now won back-to-back Champions Leagues and this season's Soanish La Liga title since taking charge in January 2016.

Match hero Ronaldo showed off his superior skills in the match. But early in the match, he complained to German referee Felix Brych about the rough treatment he was receiving from Juve.

Ronaldo earned his third Champions League winners' medal for Spanish club Real Madrid and fourth in total counting his medal for Manchester United, as the 32-year-old superstar striker continues to impress and break records. In Cardiff, Ronaldo’s performance demonstrated the skills that make him a winner including speed, mindfulness, aggression, pace, desire, anticipation, and technique as a key player that helped Real overwhelm the Juventus defense.

Ronaldo's first goal went past the outstretched right arm of Juventus goalie Gianluigi Buffon. Ronaldo’s second goal showed the touch of a poacher. The Portugal captain now has a remarkable record of 105 goals in 140 Champions League games with 12 goals in 13 games this season.

Real Madrid gave their fans the performance of a world-class team, ripping apart the Juve defense that has a reputation as one of football's toughest and did not concede a goal in either leg of their quarter-final win against Barcelona, stopping Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Luis Suarez.

Juventus performed with such success in this Champions League tournament in the run-up to the final game, and many experts had them as favorites to win the silverware. However, Juve was heavily beaten by a tough and gifted Real Madrid. Real survived a whirlwind Juventus opening before taking control after the break, with Modric and Toni Kroos keeping possession in midfield and Ronaldo scoring goals.

Juventus were fit en route to this final. Massimiliano Allegri's Juventus side fought hard but their formidable defense and a potent attack led by Gonzalo Higuain could not stop Real Madrid. Juve was in the game after Mandzukic's sublime overhead kick was the equalizer, but they faded badly in the second half. Juve goalie Gigi Buffon became a three-time loser at 39 years. The agony on Buffon’s face was apparent as he tried in vain to stop Casemiro's long-range shot, which was deflected tantalizingly out of his reach off Sami Khedira's heel. Juve has now lost five Champions League finals since they last won the competition in 1996.

Cristiano Ronaldo was named “Man of the Match” writing history at the Millennium Stadium as he scored in his third different Champions League final. Ronaldo has scored in three different Champions League finals (2017, 2014 and 2008), more than any other player. Ronaldo has scored his 600th goal in all competitions for club and country.

Zinedine Zidane is the first manager to win back-to-back European Cup-Champions League trophies since Arrigo Sacchi with AC Milan (1989, 1990). Real have won their last six European Cup finals, last losing one in 1981 against Liverpool. Real became the first team in Champions League history to score 500+ goals (503 goals total).

Gareth Bale made Welsh football history with his third Champions League title. Wales star Bale returned from a calf injury as a 77th-minute substitute. After Real Madrid’s victory, Bale lifted the Champions League trophy in his home city of Cardiff after the game. After the match, Bale told the media that he is 'happy' to stay and wants more trophies at Real Madrid. Bale says he is happy at Real Madrid and has committed his future to the Champions League winners. The 27-year-old, who signed a deal with Los Blancos until 2022, has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu. The former Tottenham Hotspur player joined Real in 2013 for a then world record fee of £85m.

"We are winning trophies and I am happy. I have signed a long-term contract at Madrid," said Bale. "My family is happy and I am happy, so yes we will continue what we are doing. It's the reason why I came to Real Madrid - to win trophies.”

“We're enjoying winning them at the moment, so we'll continue to do so," Bale added. "Three Champions Leagues in four seasons isn't too bad. I think we can get better. We are still quite young as a whole team and we have a great squad."

Gareth Bale was injured in Lisbon playing for Real Madrid in the Champions League in November 2016. Bale was happy to play in the final in his home city despite still being troubled by an ankle injury. Bale had surgery in November and suggested that without the Cardiff final in his sights he may have opted for a second operation.

"It's been difficult with my ankle this year," Bale said. "I obviously came back way too early from my surgery and I suffered a bit. We were considering more at one point, but I've worked tirelessly hard to get back and to get ready for this game. I need to go on holiday and rest and come back stronger next season - mainly for my ankle just to get it properly recovered. Then I'll obviously do some work in the off-season to get it stronger and ready for next season so I'll be firing on all cylinders."

Bale replaced Karim Benzema with Real leading 3-1 thanks to two Ronaldo goals and a long-range strike from Casemiro.

"I was just happy to get on for the last few minutes," Bale said. "We just had to go for it. It's always cagey in a final but we're happy with the win. To play a final in your home city is incredible, but to win it is even better a great experience. Cardiff has held an incredible event and we've literally not had a problem since we've been here; it's been immaculate. I don't think many players have won the Champions League in their home city where they were born, so it's a great memory to have."

Bale became the first Welshman to win the trophy three times - he also won it with Real last season and in 2014. Bale is the sixth player to win the Champions League or European Cup in his home city.

Bale is suspended for Wales' World Cup qualifier in Serbia on 11 June and will rest over the summer in a bid to regain full fitness, having also suffered calf problems along with his ankle injury.

"It's very disappointing, to be honest, but I'll be cheering on the boys," Bale added. "We always stick together, work as a team. We're never scared to battle and fight."
