Stoke City vs. Crystal Palace - Premier League

Stoke were relegated after Patrick van Aanholt of Crystal Palace scored his sides second goal past Stoke and England goalie Jack Butland during the Premier League match between Stoke City and Crystal Palace at Bet365 Stadium on May 5, 2018 in Stoke on Trent, England

Crystal Palace goals: McArthur 68, Van Aanholt 86

In an exciting match with a sad ending, Palace’s second-half comeback condemned Stoke to relegation.

Opening the match scoring, Stoke’s Shaqiri curled a free kick into the top right of the net! The ball took a little deflection off of Loftus-Cheek, sending it right into the corner. Hennessey had little chance of saving Shaqiri’s effort, and the deflection took the ball out of his reach giving hope to Stoke 1-0!

However, Stoke lost yet another lead! Zaha romped down through the middle of the pitch, sending the ball to his left for Loftus-Cheek, who sent it on to McArthur who slid the ball across Stoke goalie Butland and into the bottom right for the equalizer 1-1! James McFarlane McArthur is a Scottish footballer, who plays as a central midfielder for Premier League club Crystal Palace and the Scotland national football team.

Anxiety manifested in a struggling Stoke’s defensive line, inviting Palace on throughout the match. Stoke tried to hold on for 45 minutes in a risky approach. Palace’s equalizer came after one of Stoke’s few attacks. Wilfried Zaha led a counter and fed Loftus Cheek, who slipped in McArthur. Shoulders slumped around the stadium when he bobbled a shot home.

Next Christian Benteke played the ball wide right for Zaha, who delivered it back into the center for Van Aanholt. Shawcross attempted to intercept and took the pace off the ball, teeing it up for Palace defender Van Aanholt who slammed the winner under Butland and into the net defeating Stoke 1-2.

Paul Lambert’s side Stoke City are relegated after a ten-year stay in the Premier League. Crystal Palace’s win ensures the survival of the south Londoners. The last time they slipped out of the top flight, in the mid-Eighties, it took them 23 years to get back. Congratulations to Crystal Palace, who have managed to stay up after their bad start to the season with a seven-game losing streak.

A decade ago Stoke City won promotion up to the Premier League with a tense draw against Leicester City. Their 10-season spell in the top flight is now over, after defeat at home to Crystal Palace confirmed their relegation. At full-time, they remained only three points from the last safe spot with one game to play but Swansea face Southampton on Tuesday and so one of those teams’ tally will go beyond what is available to Championship League bound Stoke.

Stoke City manager Paul Lambert says Stoke sleepwalked towards relegation but will return.

“I can’t put my thoughts into words so soon after the game,” said Lambert. “Emotions are up and down after a tough afternoon. I feel for everybody connected with the club.”

Stoke City vs. Crystal Palace - Premier League

Jack Butland was left in tears as Stoke became the first side to be relegated from the Premier League this season. The Potters ended their 10 season stay in the top flight with a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace and the England shot-stopper was left inconsolable after the final whistle.

Stoke manager Paul Lambert was hopeful before the match but gutted afterward.

“We have to try and win, throw everything at it. We have 90 minutes to do it, so we can’t go at it from the off, but the intent is there. We can’t attack for 90 minutes, it’s impossible. But if we win today, we’re right back in it. We’ve lacked in forward areas, that’s evident, we don’t have the personnel. But hopefully someone will create something and we’ll get a goal. Palace won’t take their foot off the gas, we have to be ready for that and be on the front foot. The crowd will be right for us and drive us on. We just need a break, and play well to win,” said Stoke manager Paul Lambert. “It’s people being anxious, worried about what might happen when we’ve got the lead.”

Patrick van Aanholt of Crystal Palace celebrates scoring his side's second goal with teammates Andros Townsend and Christian Benteke

Patrick van Aanholt did not celebrate his goal.

“Normally I like to celebrate when I score but I’d like to apologize to Stoke City and their fans, I wish my goal didn’t relegate you, but you’ll be back soon! Great club with great fans,”

Felix Wood praised Crystal Palace veteran manager Roy Hodson.

“Palace under Hodgson have become good to watch and have pulled themselves out of free-fall, with an injury list that others would have hidden behind. I hope that posterity remembers Hodgson not as the man who had Kane on corner duty but as someone who consistently made small clubs and unfashionable players punch above their weight. And also for any young players coming through, Zaha and Loftus-Cheek’s experience, this season will attest to the fact that a team that will play you and a manager that will allow you to achieve is better than being squashed at one of the mega-clubs.”

Crystal boss Roy Hodgson talked about his side before the match with Stoke.

“I hope we have the same mindset we’ve had all season. I’m really hoping it won’t change at all. We want to play as well as we possibly can to the end of the season, not least because of the integrity of the league, and it’s a mistake when teams switch off. We’re not going to switch off. If we lose, it’s because Stoke will have played better than us. When you play against a team that is going to be as motivated and fired up as they’re going to be, it’s always going to be a problem for you. What’s more, they have very good players. We have prepared the players, but now it’s all about the actors on the field. We’re aware it’s last-chance saloon time for Stoke.”
