England World Cup 2018 Russia first round qualifiers update

Arsenal striker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring for England. Just in time, England Captain Harry Kane volleyed in an injury-time equalizer to tie the score against the Scots 2-2 after Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths came through with two superlative free kicks that looked like legend-making magic to Scottish fans as the strikes went to the right and left of England super goalie No.1, Joe Hart.  Scotland were ever so close to their first win over the auld enemy since 1999 - their first at Hampden since 1985. Gordon Strachan’s Scotland side almost tasted victory against their arch-rivals England, but instead, two precious World Cup points went up in smoke. England Captain Harry Kane volleys in an injury-time equalizer to tie score against Scotland 2-2

Tottenham Hotspur star striker Harry Kane will remain captain after leading his England side as they drew 2-2 with Scotland in a fight to the finish on Saturday. In his past four appearances for club and country combined, Harry Kane has scored nine goals.

Thirty-one-year-old Heaton will make his debut start for England in a career that has seen him play in all four divisions in England. Heaton did not feature on the first team at Manchester United and has since played for Swindon, Antwerp, Cardiff, QPR, Rochdale, Wycombe and Bristol City as well as the Clarets.

Heaton will be winning his third cap for England with both of his previous appearances coming off the bench.

"Obviously I have played across all four divisions, the ambition never left me, that hunger to play for England," Heaton said. "It might have felt, for other people, a long way off at certain times, playing down in League Two, but I never lost that belief."

Manchester City goalkeeper Hart played the full 90 minutes at Hampden Park, giving up two late free kicks from Scotland’s Leigh Griffiths.

After the match, Southgate was asked if Hart was at fault for the goals.

"They were great free-kicks. Beyond that, coaching conversations I have with players stay private,” said Southgate. "If we go down that route then it's not the right thing to do. I go back to the concession of free-kicks being the starting point. There are many areas we could have done better."

Thirty-year-old Joe Hart has won 71 caps for England. However, Hart faces fierce competition from Butland, Heaton, and Southampton's Fraser Forster to keep his No.1 shirt.

"You need to give players the opportunity," said Southgate. "In the past, one or two keepers have given up international football because they've not had that chance, so I'm conscious of keeping players involved."

Butland returned to active play in late April after being sidelined with a fractured ankle while on England duty in March 2016.

"We think he can also challenge for the number one spot,” said Southgate. "It is a difficult call on Fraser, who is also a very good keeper. With those four and [Sunderland's] Jordan Pickford, plus a couple of lads coming up potentially from the Championship next year, we are very healthy."

England’s clash with France on Tuesday will be the first senior England fixture with a video assistant referee. The use of VARs is being trialed by world governing body Fifa and may feature in next year's World Cup. Italian Davide Massa will referee the match, with two conventional assistant referees.

The Oasis song Don't Look Back in Anger will be played before the game as the French pay their respects to those killed in the recent attacks in London and Manchester. Fans will hold up red and white placards to form the England flag as the song is played just before the players emerge from the tunnel. Both teams will wear black armbands and a minute's silence will also be observed prior to the match.

England have won only one of their past six away games against France (D1 L4) - a 1-0 win under Glenn Hoddle in June 1997. However, they did win their last meeting with Les Bleus, in a friendly at Wembley in November 2015 (2-0).

The rivalry between England–Scotland football rivalry between the two national football teams is legendary.

The competition is the oldest international fixture in the world, first played in 1872 at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow.

Social and cultural antagonism and conflict have gone on for centuries between the two clubs and has contributed to the intense nature of the sporting contests.

Scottish nationalism has also been a factor in the Scots' desire to defeat England above all other rivals.

The BBC website reports that the games "have represented all that is good and all that is bad about football since the fixture began.

FIFA World Cup Qualifying 2014: Scotland v Wales Tue 26 Mar 2013

Scotland hero Jordan coached Bale at Tottenham Hotspur and has seen the midfielder develop into a major world talent.

Bale, who scored both goals in Wales' 2-1 win over Scotland in Cardiff, is on a run of 11 goals in nine games - with 16 goals scored this season. Bale's late winner against Scotland in October came from 25 yards and after he had won the penalty that got Wales level.

Scotland sit bottom of World Cup qualifying Group A with just two points from four matches.

Jordan as assistant boss, managed a goalless QPR draw against Spurs in January - Bale did not score.

Jordan, who scored in three World Cups, thinks Scotland should remain confident.

"We got a draw and Gareth was very, very quiet," Jordan explained. "We had to look at it very carefully because we are at a QPR team that were and are bottom of the league and we couldn't play an open game because we would have got absolutely turned over.

"We nearly won the game, we got a good draw. I can't recall Gareth having a chance.

"We know how Gareth is. We know what his strengths are, but it only takes one moment of indiscipline or lack of concentration and you have lost the game with people like that about."

"If you have seen him in the last two or three months, he has taken a responsibility. I think he has matured."

"I don't think there is any difference in ability, there is more responsibility and he is more involved in the game now.

"It's not just as a football player, as an athlete he is phenomenal.

"You see Gareth, as he has done unfortunately against Scotland as others, the goals he will score at the end of games.

"Because as quick and as powerful he is as an athlete, he has an aerobic thing that is second to none, he can go and go.

"If your tactic is to mark him, and you have got to do it for 90 minutes, you are in for one helluva hard night.

"And as we see now, with the responsibility he is taking on his shoulders, not only is he playing well but he is getting the goals."

"You do give respect to the opposition, especially with Gareth, and you don't want to get caught on the break," he added. "But I think you can get the balance right when you are playing at Hampden with that crowd behind you.

"But you have got to plan it very carefully. You can't play too open a game," continued Jordan. "You have got be secure at the back but you have got to take the game to them, because throughout my career and as a supporter, Scotland can beat the best at Hampden."

The Scottish National Team is managed by former Celtic boss, Gordon Strachan and co-captained by Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher and Celtic captain Scott Brown. Scotland play their home matches at Hampden Stadium, in Glasgow. Scotland national team has competed in eight World Cup finals. Scotland are presently competing in the qualification matches ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
