United's superstar striker Wayne Rooney believes the Red Devils will be in a 'great position' to retain their Premier League title if they defeat Arsenal on Sunday.

United go into the match eight points behind league leaders Arsenal after a slow start to the campaign under new manager David Moyes.

Rooney has scored nine goals in 17 appearances to date this season.

"I think at the minute there's 28 games to go, anything can happen, one result can turn the league on its

"We're still within touching distance and to get a victory on Sunday will put us in a great position I think.

"It is the perfect fixture for us. Arsenal are obviously doing really well but with our current form, it is a chance for us to get a bit closer in the table.

"I think for us all it's a massive game, Arsenal are doing really well so for us it's a chance to get closer in the table and keep our current form going.

"I've always enjoyed the games against Arsenal, it's a great club and it's great to play against them obviously and to score. Especially when you score winning goals because they're big games."

United went an eighth game without loss when they drew 0-0 at Real Sociedad and enjoyed a 1-0 win against last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund.

The Gunners lead the league by five points from a trio of rivals.

Rooney admits the north London side have made clear improvements and says it will be 'interesting' to see if they can continue their strong form and avoid a traditional late-season collapse.

"I think they've got some great players and you know they're a good team," said Rooney, whose first Premier League goal came against Arsenal more than 11 years ago," continued Rooney. "I said the other day after the game it will be interesting to see if they can maintain that, certainly over the last six or seven years they've faded off.

"But they seem in a better place, they seem stronger so it will be interesting to see.

"We know we will have to be at our best to beat them but we are capable of that.

"I have always enjoyed my games against them and it has always been a big game. Hopefully we can get the right result on Sunday."

Wayne Rooney Joins Manchester United 200 Club

Wayne Rooney has joined the Man United 200 club by scoring his 200th goal for Manchester United in Tuesday evening’s 4-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

Rooney is in topform this season and scored two goals as well as created the fourth for Antonio Valencia, as United battled to victory in David Moyes’ first Champions League game as new manager of United.

After the win, Rooney was asked whether he is settled at Old Trafford after a summer of speculation.

‘Listen, I’m concentrating on my football as I have done all summer. I’ve put my head down, worked hard to get myself fit for the season. I’m pleased with the way I have come back and delighted that I am scoring goals.’

Roo is only the fourth United player to score 200 goals for the club with Tuesday’s brace against Bayer Leverkusen.

‘I’m happy to be in a position where I get the opportunity to score goals – and long may that continue,’ Rooney said.

‘It’s a great honour for me to have scored 200 goals for a club like Manchester United. When you look at the list of top scorers I’m only the fourth player in the club’s history to have reached this number after Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Jack Rowley.

‘It’s certainly something I’m very proud of. My main aim is always to help the team win games and if I score that’s a bonus. Hopefully there are still a few more goals to come from me yet.’

‘The reception I got when I was substituted was amazing and meant a lot,’ added Rooney. ‘I want to thank the fans for that.

‘The Manchester United fans have been brilliant since the start of the season, their support home and away is always top-drawer and means a lot to the team. The best way to repay the fans is with good team performances.’

Super star striker Wayne Rooney spoke of his pride after becoming the fourth United player to score 200 goals for Manchester United with a brace against Bayer Leverkusen.

Starting the seasonRooney has been in terrific form, with his two goals helping United to a 4-2 win over Leverkusen in their opening match of their 2013-14 Champions League campaign.

‘I’m happy to be in a position where I get the opportunity to score goals – and long may that continue,’ Rooney said.

Rooney was asked about his relationship with new manager, David Moyes.

"He's a great manager and thoroughly deserves this job because of what he did at Everton. It's good to work under him and hopefully be successful together.

"I feel great. The training is a bit different under the new manager. I remember it from Everton. It's more intense. That's helping me. I feel good and am glad to be out playing.

"I have put my head down and worked hard and tried to do everything right. I have tried to show the right attitude. I have always felt that's a really important thing to do. That's paying off for me on the pitch. I feel fit and ready to do well."

The 200th goal of his United career means that Rooney is 50 short of Sir Bobby Charlton's 40-year-old club record.

"It's always a challenge. It's a massive football club and it's amazing how long that record has stood for. So it's great to get to 200. That's a great honour and I'm really proud of that. To be edging closer to [Charlton's record] is great. The most important thing for me was to get back playing and get among the goals."

The transfer deal is expected to take place over this weekend - with the 25-year-old expected in London in the next 24 hours to undergo a medical and look to finalize his move to Arsene Wenger's side.

Arsenal will pay Real Madrid around £22 million for Higuain. That figure would break the club's current record of £15 million to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrei Arshavin in 2009.

Italian giants Juventus were also in the race to sign Higuain.

"We have been given permission by Real Madrid to negotiate with Arsenal," said his father Jorge Higuain. "I will luckily be able to see my son in the Premier League soon."

Wenger did not want to talk about getting revenge for the whooping they took from the Red Devils.

"I will not mention last season at all," he said. "Ninety per cent of the players who will play on Saturday have not played in this game."

"Do we want revenge? No," insisted Wenger. "I believe, of course, there is an emotional aspect to a result like that. "But on a footballing front, I don't think you give too much importance to a result like that.

"It is down to a team being much better than another that the scores are high, or down to special circumstances.

"On the day, I think the result was down to special circumstances, Wenger continued. "That's why the emotional meaning is big but the footballing meaning is not very big, and we have had that behind us for a long, long time now."

"If we do well in this game, we can come closer to Man United and we'll have played mainly all the big teams away from home," Wenger continued. "So for us it is a very important game.

"We know that will be vital because it looks like many teams can beat each other. It is very important for us to do well against the big teams.

"Tottenham beat them at home this season, so there is certainly an opportunity."

"It concerns me a little bit," Wenger admitted. "When you are 4-0 down in 36 minutes you can't say all is well on that front!

"I don't think it is Steve Bould's fault!

Young Jack Wilshire will feature.

"He can cope with it mentally," said Wenger. "Football is fantastic when you can play. One thing that Jack has learned in that long spell he was out, 17 months in a life of a young boy is massive.

"I just want him to enjoy playing football. He loves football, he loves to play and the most important thing is he keeps that happiness on the pitch."
