Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late goal saved Manchester United

PREMIER LEAGUE APRIL, EPL TICKETS

Chelsea on top of England Premier League

Manchester United cannot catch Chesea at this point in the season, but they are still barely in the running for a top four finish after a 1-1 draw versus Everton in a dramatic match at Old Trafford. For the 9th time this season, Man United shared the points with their opponent. Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late goal saved United. The Swede converted his 27th goal of the season from the penalty spot. The Toffees' just missed a chance of a second win in 24 games at Old Trafford. Everton manager Ronald Koeman came close to winning his first three Premier League games at Old Trafford. Ibrahimovic's goal likely ends Everton's chances of Champions League football next season after a hard fought battle for a top four finish.

Manchester United continued their Premier League unbeaten run to 20 games. After a scoreless first half for United, manager Jose Mourinho brought in sub Paul Pogba at half-time, as the world's costliest player hit the bar. Ander Herrera had previously hit the bar before the break. Ibrah also had a header disallowed. Mourinho planned to prioritise the Europa League by resting his players in the Evertpm Premier League. They are five games in continental competition from a return to the Champions League. The Red Devils are only four points from the top four on the EPL Table and no longer have a game in hand on Manchester City.

Mourinho brought on Pogba, back after his hamstring injury. At times, the players themselves seemed confused; Marouane Fellaini served as a center-forward. Wayne Rooney missed the game with pain in both ankles accounting for his absence from the squad. Man Utd captain Rooney has played only 86 minutes the past two months. Phil Jagielka was amazing scoring Everton's only goal. Phil Jagielka hooked a shot through David de Gea's legs. It was his first Premier League goal in 672 days,

Saint Etienne 0-1 Manchester United (agg: 0-4)

In the first leg of their Round 32 tie, Man United ended Saint-Étienne's ten-game unbeaten run in Europe this season, and United are favored to win the second leg. Former PSG superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimović has scored 17 goals in 14 matches against St-Étienne including a deflected free-kick, a tap-in and a penalty in United's 3-0 first-leg triumph.

Prior to losing their first leg Old Trafford match, St-Étienne were undefeated in ten European matches this season. They are still unbeaten in ten European home games but four of their five Stade Geoffroy Guichard fixtures this term have ended in draws, three of them goalless. European Cup runners-up in 1976, St-Étienne were eliminated in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 32 by Basel. Their best campaigns in this competition culminated in the quarter-finals in 1980 and 1981. United got to the last 16 in 2015/16, but the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League remains the only major UEFA trophy they have never won. Continental champions in 1968, 1999 and 2008, the Red Devils lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1991. United's Paul Pogba came up against his older brother, St-Étienne defender Florentin Pogba, in the 16 February first leg.

United's Ibrahimović enjoyed playing St-Étienne during his time in France; he scored 14 goals in 13 games against Les Verts in all competitions.

Before breaking through at Monaco, United's Anthony Martial signed his first professional contract with St-Étienne's main rivals, Lyon. His record in two matches against Les Verts with Monaco is D1 L1 – he struck in a 1-1 draw against St-Étienne in April 2015.

United reserve goalkeeper Sergio Romero turns 30 the day of the second leg, 24 hours after defender Phil Jones's 25th birthday.

United's Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney played at St-Étienne's Stade Geoffroy Guichard in England's 0-0 draw with Slovakia at UEFA EURO 2016. Old Trafford team-mate Marcus Rashford was an unused substitute.

St-Étienne coach since 2009, Christophe Galtier steered Les Verts to French League Cup success in 2012/13. He had worked as assistant to Alain Perrin at St-Étienne prior to getting the top job. Originally a defender, he began his playing career at home-town club Marseille.

José Mourinho took over as United boss last summer. Having made his name winning the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League with Porto, he landed Europe's top club prize again with Internazionale Milano as well as three Premier League titles during two stints at Chelsea. In Mourinho's last foray in this competition, he guided Porto to the 2003 UEFA Cup final, where they edged Celtic 3-2 in Seville

EFL Cup semi-final results: Manchester United 2-0 Hull City, Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

In their first leg FA Cup semi-final tie Manchester United continued their winning streak by beating Hull City at Wembley with second half goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini. United have won their last nine games in all competitions. Juan Mata has scored in three of his past four EFL Cup matches scoring two goals for Manchester United, and one goal for Chelsea. Liverpool lost their first leg FA Cup semi-final tie to a fit and agressive Southampton 1-0.

With a second leg still to come, Manchester United and Southampton go into their ties with the lead after Hull City and Liverpool lost their first semi-final matches. Giant Premier League sides Manchester United and Liverpool remain confident of winning their second-leg clashes to go on to compete in a battle of the titans in the 2017 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hopes to protect his record of never losing a semi-final match. Klopp said, “When you can smell the final you do everything to get there.”

Before the game Southampton manager Claude Puel was confident.

"We played Liverpool in the Premier League and it was a strong game for us with organisation," said Frenchman Puel. "We played strong and were strong in defence. We played at a good level but it will be important for this game to have more of the ball and try and have control of the game. Their ability to control the ball along with good pressing, with technical players, is exciting. We want to exploit them. The players are ready for the game. It is an exciting challenge for us. The Premier League game was strong, there are many games in January, different possibilities. This game is important and I think my players are ready for the game."

Referee: Mike Dean

Manchester United is enjoying a run of six Premier League victories with their 2-0 defeat of the Hammers. Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in East London to take Man United to within a point of fourth place. The controversial sending off of West Ham’s Sofiane Feghouli at 15 minutes after what looked like a hard but fair challenge resulted in a straight red card given by referee Mike Dean in front of a crowd of 57,000.

United manager José Mourinho admitted that the turning point of the match was the controversial call by referee Dean to send off Feghouli after a hefty challenge with Phil Jones that saw both men fight for a loose ball. Half-time arrived accompanied by a chorus of boos directed at Dean. Feghouli will now miss the Hammers' FA Cup third-round home tie against Manchester City on Friday. West Ham supporters showed their anger at the ref by chanting 'Mike Dean - it's all about you'. Dean has shown 14 red cards in the EPL since the start of last season - at least six more than any other referee.

The match was scoreless at half‑time when Mourinho brought on Juan Mata, and then Marcus Rashford who combined to score the opening goal of the match. Mata has been involved in 40 Premier League goals (25 goals, 15 assists) since his Man United debut. Only Wayne Rooney with 46 Premier League goals (29 goals, 17 assists) has a better record in that time.

United are steadily improving match by match hot on the heels of the other top four contenders and gaining momentum with every win including their victory against West Ham only 48 hours after their previous win against Middlesbrough.

After the game, West Ham boss Slaven Bilic was still angry with Dean but proud of his men.

"I was pleased with the performance, we fought hard and gave everything. I told my players that if we did this we will be all right in the table. Ten men against a team like this is very hard - but we had chances. I am disappointed with the result and frustrated by how we lost it, but I am proud of my players."

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is enjoying his longest winning run in all competitions (seven) since January 2014 when in charge of Chelsea.

"It was hard for us to think well with one more man - and it was very hard for them physically. I was happy with my choices in Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford, they gave us what we needed. Rashford is very professional and very mature. He is a Manchester United player with Manchester United DNA. I don't feel sorry for West Ham - I didn't watch the decisions. I think if you talk about decisions, we are the champions of bad decisions."

Man United fans delighted with League Cup victory against Man City

Juan Mata scores fourth-round opener and match winner from Zlatan Ibrahimovic's pullback to sent Manchester United to the EPL Cup Quarter-Finals. Ibra held off Otamendi in an aerial battle then squared for Mata to sidefoot home from eight yards out in the games only goal, final score 1-0.

Manchester United redeemed themselves after their loss to Chelsea, playing uptempo and with passion in their defeat of cross-town rivals and noisy neighbors Manchester City.

“It was nice to score but the most important thing was to put the last defeat behind us,” said Mata. “We had a bad day in London at Chelsea and we knew we had to be strong and give 100% in this game.  You are going to get criticism if you play for Manchester United and things are not going well. That’s professional football, and you have to learn to deal with it. After a defeat, everyone is going to speak bad about the team and about the manager. We as a group need to stay strong and believe we can do great things together.”

This was the fifth League Cup meeting between the sides. The previous four EPL Cup clashes were all exciting and memorable. Fans showed up at Old Trafford expecting some feistiness in the massive Manchester Derby. Both managers hoped for needed a win – Pep Guardiola now has not had a win in his last six matches.  José Mourinho and his side were delighted with the 1-0 victory after everything going wrong in the Red Devils’ 0-0 draw at Liverpool and recent 4-0 shellacking against Chelsea.

Jose Mourniho’s Man Utd side and Pep Guardiola’s Man City side faced off again at Old Trafford in a massive Manchester Derby on Wednesday. The Red Devils won the clash 1-0 knocking out City thanks to Juan Mata's 54' min goal to the delight of the passionate Man United fans.

I’m happy. The players they did everything, said Jose Mourinho after the game. “Last week everything went against us, obviously it hurts but we are professionals. We felt deeply such a negative result and today was a chance to clean away that feeling a little bit because it’s a derby and a knockout. To win against Man City I think gives everyone a better feeling and I’m happy for the players and especially for the fans.

Six weeks after Manchester City’s 2-1 Premier League win against Manchester United at Old Trafford, United got revenge as Mourinho’s decision to play a virtually full-strength side was a good one. Spaniard Juan Mata fired home from 10 meters in the 54th minute ffrom a lay-off by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. As a result, City is winless in six games under Spanish manager Pep Guardiola, the worst run of his distinguished coaching career. Guardiola rested most of his key players.
