In the clash of football titans, several of the highest scoring football stars will compete on the field as two of the world's top managers, Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho pit their players in the first leg of a major and crucial series to determine which team goes on to compete in the next round of the Champions League.
Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says there is heavy pressure on Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho to win the Champions League.
To date, Real Madrid is 13 points behind Barcelona in the Spanish La Liga title race.
On the other hand Man United is clear 15 points at the top of the Premiership still realistically challenging ofor the treble this season.
“Their target is the European Cup this year," said Ferguson. "They got a bad start in the league and they’re chasing their tails because Barcelona’s form is incredible. So I think Jose has set his sights on the European Cup this year, there’s no doubt about that.
“He’d be the only person to win the European Cup with three different teams, so it’s a fantastic challenge for him. I think the European Cup has always been important to him. He’s done a great job there, he’s got a terrific squad of players. But there’s no secret to his desire to win the European Cup.”
Robin van Persie, Manchester United
Premier League: Manchester United 2-1 FC Liverpool
Premier League top goal-scorer, Robin van Persie of Manchester United scored the opening goal during the Barclays Premier League "Manchester Derby" match between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford on January 13, 2013 in Manchester, England.
United remain in first place in the English Premier League after they easily defeated Liverpool today with goals from Robin van Persie and Nemanja Vidic. Luis Suarez did not score but Daniel Sturridge scored Liverpool's only goal earning 3 more points for Man Utd.
It was van Persie's 9th goal in 9 games.
Robin van Persie opened the scoring with a side-footed finish across Pepe Reina to give United the lead.
After half-time, Sir Alex Ferguson replaced Ashley Young with Antonio Valencia after the England winger was injured in a collision with Daniel Agger.
Liverpool subbed new signing Daniel Sturridge for Lucas Leiva for Sturridge's Premier League debut.
Then Liverpool soon found themselves 2-0 down as Danny Welbeck was brought down by Martin Skrtel earning a free kick for United. Van Persie's resultant free-kick was headed home by Patrice Evra.
Sturridge then scored a goal back for the visitors, as he put home an easy tap-in to give Liverpool some hope of getting into the match.

Manchester United Update
United remain are seven points clear on the top of the Barclays Premier League, but they are well aware to be careful - with still potent memories that Manchester City overtook the Reds from further back late into the 2011-2012 race to take the title.
"Over the years, December has been a good month for us," said Fergie. "There's 17 games left and we have a seven-point lead. It's not what I would say is a healthy lead but it is a lead and it gives us something to kick on with.
"We just don't want to make the mistakes we did last year."
"It's a very good result here," he enthused. "If you look at their home record, they're a very difficult team to play against. I thought it was a slow start to the game and we took a bit of time to get going but, once we started to get those corner-kicks, with Robin whipping them in, it was keeping them under pressure.
"After getting the first goal, the good thing about the team is they chased a second one immediately. 2-0 at half time was a good scoreline for us. There were one or two bits and pieces towards the end of the game but you have got to give credit to Wigan.

Michael Carrick and Cleverley proved a strong central partnership.
Dynamic-duo striker partners Van Persie and Rooney have earned nine goals between them in their last four league games - and United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson felt that some of the football was terrific.
“Some of the play was terrific and I don’t know whether we relaxed at 3-0 or whether Sunderland got a grip on the game with 20 minutes to go,” Ferguson said.
“But up to then some of our play was fantastic and we should have scored a lot of goals. It was possibly some of the best football we’ve seen this season, some of it was very good. I have no complaints about that first hour. It was wonderful to watch.”
Sunderland lie just a point above the relegation zone after their loss.
