Athletic Club v Barcelona - La Liga

Barcelona's Lionel Messi is the top goal scorer in European football

List of top 10 goal scorers in European Leagues as of October 31, 2017

Argentine and Barrcelona superstar striker Lionel Messi is closing in on the European Golden Boot after netting a brace in FC Barcelona's 4-1 over Villarreal. Reportedly Messi would love Barcelona to sign Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur duo Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen. Alli bagged a brace with Eriksen also scoring in the Spurs’ recent 3-1 Champions League win over rival Spanish La Liga titan club Real Madrid. Messi believes both players would fit in at the Nou Camp, playing in Barca’s midfield. Messi thinks the talented Spurs’ duo could help Barcelona win silverware.

Portugal and Real Madrid superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo may not be among the top 10 goalscorers in Europe at the end of this season. Messi has now scored 35 Spanish La Liga goals this campaign and remains 2 goals ahead of Edinson Cavani, who also netted a brace for Paris Saint-Germain on the weekend. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the only African on the list. Aubameyang is back into joint-third spot with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski. Edin Dzeko follows in 5tth place after scoring a brace against AC Milan, while Barca’s Luis Suarez also sits on 27 goals. Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo was rested for a fourth time out of Real's past 7 La Liga games, which resulted in him only scoring once in the past 9 league game weeks. Ronaldo has 20 La Liga strikes, 4 away from the top 10 marksmen in Europe but will have a chance to add to his goal talley.

Liverpool's star striker, Luis Suarez will surely be under observation after recent controversies - including being accused of a deliberate hand-ball before scoring the Reds’ second goal in their 2-1 FA Cup victory against Mansfield.

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, who scored 183 goals in 369 games for Liverpool, disagreed with the recent comments by Sir Alex Ferguson and others about Suarez.

"He didn't really need to say too much in my eyes," Fowler remarked. "Suarez is a condemned man before he even steps on the pitch. As much as he is getting stick from everyone else, I think it's driving him on and making him a better player. He wants to prove a lot to people wrong and show how good he is."

"Every player will have mishaps in a game. Robin van Persie was accused of elbowing someone earlier in the season. Gareth Bale has been accused of being a diver at times. Luis Suarez does have some misdemeanors in his past but I want to go on the positives. I love him as a player."

Liverpool have lost seven of their past eight games at Old Trafford.

Luis Suarez's Controversies

July 2010 - Handles on the line to deny Ghana a winner in the last minute of extra-time in the World Cup quarter-finals. Asamoah Gyan misses the resulting penalty and Uruguay win the shoot-out to reach the semi-finals.

November 2010 - Given seven- match ban for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal on the shoulder while playing for Ajax.

December 2011 - Given eight-match suspension and fined £40,000 for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

February 2012 - Refuses to shake hands with Evra at Old Trafford and is described as a "disgrace" by Sir Alex Ferguson.

October 2012 - Accused of diving by Stoke manager Tony Pulis.

November 2012 - Accused of stamping on Dave Jones by Wigan manager Roberto Martinez.

January 2013 - Mansfield chief executive Carolyn Radford says Suarez "stole" their FA Cup tie when he scored after using his hand.
