CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: LIVERPOOL 5-2 ROMA

Liverpool soundly defeats AS Roma 5-2 in Champions League Semi-finals

"The greatest match I've seen in 30 years at Anfield," Reds fans react to their club's win against Roma.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said his side will withstand another Roma match next week after seizing control of their Champions League semi-final first leg tie with an amazing performance highlighted by “world class” superstar striker Mo Salah. Mohamed Salah led the Red’s onslaught to leave Roma with a mountain to climb to get back. The Egyptian forward dazzled his former club with 2 exquisite goals, taking his goal tally for the campaign to 43, and 2 assists as Liverpool swept into a 5-0 lead before conceding two late goals to Roma. The 5-2 result means Roma must replicate their brilliant comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals to deny Liverpool a spot in the Champions League final in Kiev on 26 May. Klopp, concerned by the probable loss of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the rest of the season through injury, said his men will be ready for a backlash at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome next Wednesday.

“Since I arrived Liverpool has always had to take the more difficult way but in the end Liverpool always succeeded and that’s what we have to do again,” Klopp said. “If one of my players doesn’t think Roma will try to come back, then he will not play. The boys played a brilliant game over a very long period. Even the last minutes, when we conceded, Dejan Lovren was outstandingly good and this ball he misjudged. that is no problem if the full-back is in the right position. We made one mistake and the ref made one mistake and that was two goals for them. We take the penalty. We have to work again in Rome, that is no problem. There would have been work to do if we won 5-0 because Roma would do everything to strike back. What I learned tonight is that we can win the second leg too. Roma need to score against us and we are not Barcelona. Barcelona is one of the two or three best teams in the world and won so many things in the last few years. We didn’t so we will fight with all we have for the result.”

Mohamed Salah was on fire. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said of the PFA player of the year Mo Salah.

“Without a shadow of a doubt he is the ‘best player on the planet’ right now.”

Mohamed Salah reportedly will be rewarded with a prestigious piece of land in Mecca. Superstar Liverpool striker Salah has a lot to celebrate - his Champions League semi-final form where he notched two goals and two assists in the first leg against Roma, his PFA Player of the Year award win, and now the land in Mecca. Last weekend he was awarded the award ahead of Kevin De Bruyne as a reward for his 31 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League to date this season. And now the vice president of the local municipality in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, has revealed that he plans to award a piece of land in the area to Salah as congratulations. Salah was the main man for Liverpool against Roma in midweek.

"There are several choices regarding giving this piece of land," said Fahd Al-Rowky. "The way to go will be determined by Mohamed Salah as well as the Saudi system. If the Saudi system allows the land to be owned by Salah, he will be given a piece of land in Holy Mecca outside Haram. The other option will be to have a mosque built on the land in his name."

Salah celebrates each of his goals for Liverpool with an Islamic prayer. Mecca is the religion's holiest city as it was the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad.

Klopp said that mantle had to be earned over a longer period than one season but has no doubt of the former Roma player’s credentials.

“Outstanding, pretty much not able to defend,” said Klopp, who substituted Salah at 5-0 and saw Liverpool’s performance dip markedly. “The first 15 minutes we needed to adapt to their formation and then we played how we played and he has a massive impact on that. The first goal is just a genius strike, he scored already a few like this which makes clear it is no coincidence. The second is brilliant play, Bobby Firmino between the lines and he makes the pass and then Mo makes the other two goals. If anyone wants to say it is my mistake that we concede the two goals because I change the striker, I have no problem with that. Mo was running all the time and it would not have helped us if he gets an injury. What a player. If you think he is the best in the world, write it or say it. He is in outstandingly good shape, world-class shape, but to be the best in the world you need to do it over a longer period, I think. The other two are not bad.”

Roma manager Eusebio Di Francesco said memories of the three-goal comeback against Barcelona would give Roma hope for the second leg.

“Let me remind you once again the tie is not over, and we have proved it,” said Di Francesco. “We have shown we can come back. We scored three goals at home against Barcelona, so we can do it. If any of my players does not believe we can win, they can stay away from the second leg.”

German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich take on Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final tie at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday in a repeat of last season's quarterfinal clash. Manager Jupp Heynckes's Bayern booked their spot in the semis with ease having overcome Sevilla 2-1 in the quarters, while Los Blancos' progress was slightly more difficult. Zinedine Zidane's side appeared to be strolling through when they thrashed Juventus 3-0 in the first leg in Turin. However, a remarkable come back in the return leg saw Bianconeri secure three goals. The tie looked to be heading into extra time until Real Madrid were awarded a controversial last-minute penalty that superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo converted to secure a 4-3 aggregate victory. MO SALAH NAMED PFA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah named PFA player of the year

Mohamed Salah has been named as the Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year for the 2017-18 season. The Liverpool forward beat Kevin De Bruyne to take men’s award. Manchester City’s Leroy Sané is voted young player of the year. Salah was crowned PFA player of the year … then ordered home by his Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Egypt international saw off competition from the Manchester City trio of Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sané and David Silva to become the second African player to win the award after Riyad Mahrez of Leicester in 2016. Tottenham’s Harry Kane came third, with De Bruyne second. Salah, who moved to Anfield from Roma last June for a club record fee of £36.9m, has scored 41 goals in his debut season as Jürgen Klopp’s side have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Salah was asked what it meant to become the first Egyptian to win the award.

“Hopefully I’m not the last one. I’m very proud to win and I’ve worked very hard. It’s an honor to win this award especially because it was voted for by the other players,” said Salah.

Salah was presented with the award at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Sunday evening, with Man City’s winger Sané voted as young player of the year.

Mo Salah won the PFA Player of the Year award for 2017-18 on Sunday night. The Liverpool forward, 25, beat Kevin de Bruyne, Harry Kane, Leroy Sane, David Silva and David de Gea in the vote by his fellow players. Manchester City's Sane won the young player prize, while Chelsea's Fran Kirby won the Women's Player of the Year award. Bristol City's Lauren Hemp was named Women's Young Player of the Year.

"I am happy and proud," Egypt international Salah said. "I didn't have my chance at Chelsea. It was clear I would return and show everyone my football. I think I left and came back a different person, man, and player. I would like to thank my team-mates and everyone at the club for helping me to make this happen.”

Salah has scored 31 goals in 33 Premier League matches for Klopp's Liverpool side and leads the race for the 2018 Golden Boot. The Egypt international's 31st league goal against West Brom on Saturday put him alongside Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez, who share the record for a 38-game season. Mo scored in both legs of Liverpool's 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals, as well as 4 goals in their EPL victory over Watford in March. The £34m summer signing from Roma, is just the 5th footballer to earn more than 40 goal involvements in a single Premier League season (31 goals, 9 assists). Salah also won the BBC readers vote. BBC Sport readers were asked to select their winner from the six-man shortlist and the Liverpool forward got 76% of the votes.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah could be off to Real Madrid in the summer. In a shocking report today, reportedly Spanish La Liga giant club Real Madrid will hand Mohamed Salah the No.11 shirt when he leaves Liverpool for the Bernabeu this summer. According to claims in Spain Florentino Perez has ‘closed’ a stunning deal for the winger, and Salah will take Gareth Bale’s shirt number who is expected to leave Real Madrid this summer. Spanish outlet Don Balon, known for outlandish transfer claims, reported that the former Roma and Chelsea man is set to leave Anfield for Los Blancos. And the La Liga giants see Salah as the perfect man to combine with Cristiano Ronaldo in their attack. Mo Salah went off injured in Liverpool’s win over Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, and may not feature against Everton tomorrow. Barcelona are reportedly preparing a huge Arsenal swap deal proposal to beat Real Madrid to signing. The 25-year-old Salah has been in top form this season, netting 40 goals in all competitions for the Reds.

Mohamed Salah with his Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said he was "happy to have the opportunity" of being Salah's manager and added it was an "unbelievable honor" to win the award.

"It's been a fantastic ride but we still have games to go," Klopp said. "But please grab the trophy and come home. We play on Tuesday!"

"Everything he touches seems to go in the back of the net and he is having one of those seasons where you go out on the pitch not hoping you are going to score, but knowing you will. As a striker, I know that it is a great feeling to have," said Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer.

"Salah was supposedly over-priced when Liverpool paid £36.9m for him last summer but you could triple that fee and no-one would bat an eyelid - not that they would consider selling him now," BBC Sport pundit Rachel Brown-Finnis.

“The source of happiness for millions” Egypt reacted to Salah's award. “Everything he touches goes in the net.”

"To do what Salah has done in his first season at Liverpool is incredible. He has scored so many goals but he is also unselfish - he will always pick the best option even if that means he doesn't score but the team does," BBC Sport pundit Dion Dublin.

Manchester United Kevin De Bruyne was a close second. Many believed it was a two-horse race between Salah and De Bruyne for the men's Player of the Year award. Belgium international De Bruyne played a key role in Man City's title-winning campaign. He has provided more assists (15) and created more chances (104) than any other player in the Premier League this season, as well as scoring eight goals. The 26-year-old joined City for a then club record fee of £55m in 2015 and has won one Premier League title and two League Cups.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola talked about why he believed De Bruyne should have won the award.

"When you are analyzing 9 months or 10 months then there was no player better than him,” said Guardiola. "In terms of the continuity and playing every three days in all competitions he was there. I am sorry, maybe with numbers, there are numbers guys better than him, but no player in this season with the team who wins the title five games before the end, and he was the best. I would like to feel that he deserved it. But at the end in summer time we will be at home being champions and for that to happen the players have to play."

De Bruyne, who took 14% of the votes came in second. Man United goalkeeper De Gea was third with 6%, while Spurs striker Kane picked up 3% of the selections. De Bruyne's team-mates took up the final two spots, with Silva on 1% and Sane failing to win a single vote. Five Manchester City players were also named in the PFA team of the year, including De Bruyne and Silva. Sane missed out on a spot but defenders Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker and striker Sergio Aguero represented the champions.

Leroy Sane beat Harry Kane to win the Young Player Award. Sane, 22, has scored 9 goals and provided 12 assists as part of the Premier League title-winning Man City side this season. He is central to Guardiola's attacking blueprint of width, pace and elusive running and has scored important goals in victories against Liverpool and Arsenal this season. The German international beat Kane to the award as well as City team-mates Ederson and Raheem Sterling. Sane played an important role in Manchester City's title-winning season. Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and Fulham's Championship Player of the Season Ryan Sessegnon were also shortlisted.

"I am really honored to win this award," said Sane. "Thank you to the fans and my team-mates. Congratulations to all the players who played alongside me. They played a good season."

England manager Gareth Southgate was pleased to see four English players nominated for the award and said the country has "exciting players and talent" coming through ahead of the World Cup in Russia. Bristol City's Hemp, 17, is her club's top scorer this season and has produced a number of exquisite performances in the Women's Super League 1. The forward was also named England's Young Player of the Year in 2017 after an impressive campaign with the U19s.

PFA Women's Player of the Year 2017-18 Chelsea's Kirby was 'humbled' to win award. Kirby, 24, was one of five Chelsea players shortlisted for the Women's Player of the Year award as the club chases the treble this season. She scored for England against France in the SheBelieves Cup last month and is Chelsea's top scorer this season.

"It is humbling for me," she said. "I have to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted for me. It's good to see people don't mind me scoring against them once in a while!

Manchester City 5-0 Swansea City

An in-form Manchester City side celebrated winning the Premier League with a stunning home performance for their fans, and lots of goals coming from David Silva, Raheem Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne, Moto Silva, Gabriel Jesus and company in an inspirational display of talent at the Etihad. City made 1015 passes in their big 5-0 win on Sunday against the Swans who were unable to score a single goal. Ederson gets credit for the clean sheet. City are the first Premier League club ever to break the 1000-pass barrier. City had 83% possession. The massive win takes Man City up to 90 points, 16 points clear of Manchester United. They need two more wins to break Chelsea’s record points tally from 2004-05. City visit West Ham next week.

An inspired Kevin De Bruyne took a couple of touches, looked up and sent a hard hit superb shot past Swan's goalie Lukasz Fabianski from 25 yards, the ball whizzing off his right foot and soaring into the top-right corner! What a phenomenal goal by one of Man City's key football players!

“I don’t score a lot of goals inside the box. I get more opportunities to shoot from far away," said Kevin de Bruyne. "You try it. You know you have a clean strike, you feel it. It is the first time for me to be a champion and it feels nice. I was with my family, I was playing mini-golf with my son when City were confirmed as champions. It was a very nice feeling. We wanted to perform in this game. The fans enjoy it if you give the effort and play the way we did today.”
