EFL Cup semi-final results: Manchester United 2-0 Hull City, Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

In their first leg FA Cup semi-final tie Manchester United continued their winning streak by beating Hull City at Wembley with second half goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini. United have won their last nine games in all competitions. Juan Mata has scored in three of his past four EFL Cup matches scoring two goals for Manchester United, and one goal for Chelsea. Liverpool lost their first leg FA Cup semi-final tie to a fit and agressive Southampton 1-0.

With a second leg still to come, Manchester United and Southampton go into their ties with the lead after Hull City and Liverpool lost their first semi-final matches. Giant Premier League sides Manchester United and Liverpool remain confident of winning their second-leg clashes to go on to compete in a battle of the titans in the 2017 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hopes to protect his record of never losing a semi-final match. Klopp said, “When you can smell the final you do everything to get there.”

Before the game Southampton manager Claude Puel was confident.

"We played Liverpool in the Premier League and it was a strong game for us with organisation," said Frenchman Puel. "We played strong and were strong in defence. We played at a good level but it will be important for this game to have more of the ball and try and have control of the game. Their ability to control the ball along with good pressing, with technical players, is exciting. We want to exploit them. The players are ready for the game. It is an exciting challenge for us. The Premier League game was strong, there are many games in January, different possibilities. This game is important and I think my players are ready for the game."

Pepe Reina - Liverpool Goalkeeper Wants Champions League In His Future

"I won’t lie – I want to play in the Champions League and challenge for titles," said Reina

"Yes, of course, [Edwin] Van der Sar will hang up his gloves in the summer and Arsenal are also looking for a keeper. A lot of teams are looking for a keeper. There is nothing I can do or say, because I have a contract with Liverpool which I renewed last year. But I would like to be challenging for titles and be in a team with a realistic chance of winning things."

"Before, we were challenging for the Champions League and we were in the race for the title right til the end, but sadly in the last couple of years we haven't been. Nothing is fundamental but it [the Champions League is important]. I want to aspire to the maximum in my career, and that means trophies."
