Matchweek 1 Results : England Premier League

The 2013 – 2014 Premier League season is underway with last season’s holders Manchester United beating Swanssea 4-1 with the help of superstars Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott, Ryan Giggs, and Wayne Rooney under the leadership of new manager David Moyes who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Spurs won 1-0 with a goal from Spain striker Roberto Soldado on his debut to secure an opening day 1-0 victory for Tottenham Hotspur against Crystal Palace. New signings Nacer Chadli and Paulinho were named to the starting line-up but Etienne Capoue was on the substitutes’ bench. Marouane Chamakh who only signed from Arsenal a week ago, was not fit enough to start by Palace manager Ian Holloway so was non the bench with new signings Dwight Gayle and Stephen Dobbie.

In Melbourne, Steven Gerrard delivered a trademark goal in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Close to 100,000 fans cheered the Liverpool skipper as he scored in the first half after a rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone" was sung by the capacity crowd.

Spaniard striker Iago Aspas got the second in injury time to seal a hard-fought win over the two-times A-League champions.

"I want to put on record a huge thank you to people of Melbourne and Australia. The 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at the beginning was a real tear-jerker," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said.

"All we can say as players and staff is thanks for the support and we've been overwhelmed since we touched down a few days ago. It's great to get a win for all the supporters tonight," said Gerrard.

Liverpool's Socceroo players were away, playing in the East Asian Cup in South Korea.

Liverpool will face reigning Greek champions and European giants Olympiacos in their only pre-season match.

The match will also mark Gerrard's commitment and loyalty to his hometown club.

Gerrard made his Liverpool debut almost 15 years ago

"I am delighted to be honoured by Liverpool with a testimonial match and particularly thrilled that Olympiacos have accepted my invitation to play the fixture. Last time we met proved to be such a memorable game both for me personally and Liverpool Football Club," Gerrard told the club's website.

"I am also especially grateful that Olympiacos have truly embraced the aim of this match and chosen to donate their fee to charity. I am looking forward to what I know will be a fantastic game and a wonderful occasion."

Money raised from events celebrating Steven's testimonial year will be for the benefit of the Steven Gerrard Foundation (SGF), a registered charity. The foundation, set up in February 2011, is committed to making a lasting difference to disadvantaged children and young people in need.

The money generated by the game and gala dinner will go to a range of children's charitable organisations and projects in and around Merseyside.

Liverpool's opponents, Olympiacos, have confirmed that they too will be donating their appearance fee to local charities in Greece.

In addition to the clash with Olympiacos, a Testimonial Gala Dinner will be held at the Echo Arena, Liverpool after the game. Guests will be treated to a VIP Champagne Reception, a 3 Course Gourmet Dinner and entertainment.

Reds captain Gerrard and his wife Alex have three daughters, Lourdes, Lilly-Ella, and Lexie.
