Cesc Fabregas Sends Spain Into Euro 2012 Final

Cesc Fabregas reportedly had a premonition he would score the winning penalty for Spain.

“I had intuition and wanted the fifth penalty,” Fabregas said. “I told Toni Grande I thought I could repeat that great moment. They told me initially to take the second one but I said no give me the fifth as I had this premonition.”

And he made the winning goal in a 4-2 shootout with Portugal in their tense, scoreless Euro 2012 semifinal Wednesday in Donetsk. Fabregas did the same at Euro 2008 when Spain beat Italy in the quarterfinals.

For Portugal, Joao Moutinho and Bruno Alves missed their efforts for Portugal and team captain Cristiano Ronaldo was not among the first four takers.

Ronaldo said he accepted his role as the fifth penalty taker.

“It was just a question of me speaking with the coach,” Ronaldo said. “He said to me, ‘Do you want to take the fifth one?’ and I said ‘yes.’ Sometimes I take the first, the second or the third. I agreed to take the fifth.”

“I hope Spain win the tournament now because I have a lot friends there and I play there and it will be a tough final for them,” he said.

Cesc Fabregas of Spain scored the winning penalty past Rui Patrício of Portugal during the UEFA EURO 2012 semi final match between Portugal and Spain at Donbass Arena on June 27, 2012 in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Portugal manager Paulo Bento's men held Spain to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes.

There remains gossip that Bento did not have Cristiano Ronaldo take one of his team's first four penalties. With Spain taking first and his team missing twice, Ronaldo never got a chance to take one as La Roja went through 4-2 on penalty kicks.

Vicente del Bosque was substituted out very early, with del Bosque taking him out for Fabregas in the 54th minute in a switch to the formation he was expected to start with.

With no goals through 90 minutes, the sides headed for extra time - but no goals were scored.

The penalty shootout started. Spain was up 2-1 when Alves walked up to the penalty spot. Alves apparently broke the order set by his manager, and Nani was forced to run up and tell his teammate that it was his turn to take a spot kick. Alves walked back to the halfway line and Nani buried a brilliant penalty to make it 2-2.

Sergio Ramos made it 3-2. That brought Alves up to the spot. Alves missed his spot kick, rattling the crossbar.

That brought up Fabregas, who scored and sealed the victory for Spain. Fabregas' shot hit the inside of the post and snuck into the back of the net to give Spain the 4-2 win.

Germany has high hopes of ending their winless run against Italy in major tournaments when the two clash in Thursday's Euro 2012 semi-final.
.
The Germans have failed to beat Italy in seven previous attempts at major tournaments, the most recent being a 2-0 loss after extra-time at the 2006 World Cup. The form shown by Joachim Loew's side at the Euro 2012 matches todat suggests the streak may be about to come to an end.

Since losing to eventual winners Spain in the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup, Germany have won 15 consecutive competitive fixtures, which include four wins at this year's championships.

The third-ranked side has netted nine goals in Poland and Ukraines.

Germany has Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mesut Oezil who should enable Germany to defeat Italy.

Schweinsteiger insists he feels 100 percent fit.

"I'm very happy and I feel OK," Schweinsteiger said. "I know how to deal with the situation. I'm looking forward to the game, and trying my best to be ready.

"I'm feeling better today. I feel fit enough to start, and I'm really eager to do so. When I say that I feel good, I mean it."

Italian centre back Giorgio Chiellini could make a return on Thursday having missed his nation's quarter-final clash with a hamstring strain.

"I feel better," he said. "We'll see in the next few days but I hope and I think that I can play on Thursday."

To date, Italy have conceded only two goals in four matches and held Spain to a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2012 opening fixture.

Reigning European and world champions Spain are worthy opponents to face in the Euro 2012 Semi-Finals.

Seleccao captain Ronaldo is confident ahead of this clash, one that will see him line-up against some of his Real Madrid team-mates and Barcelona rivals.

“There is not any special pressure just because I am facing Spain. I have been playing at the highest level for 10 years, both at club and international level. Yes, I feel responsibility, but not pressure. I am used to these matches”, said Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has carried his national side thus far in the highly competitive competition - enabling Portugal to reach the semi final clash.
