Since Poland were beaten by Ukraine, England are assured of a play-off place but have to win on Tuesday to qualify as winners of group H.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring. England were two goals ahead through Branko Boskovic’s own goal.

Dejan Damjanovic made the score 2-1 on 71 minutes.

Hodgson selected Townsend, arguing that he had given plenty of young players like Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling a chance, and would have played Daniel Sturridge, a starter and a goalscorer last night, much more often but for injury.

Hodgson selected Sturridge, Rooney and Welbeck. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard were selected in preference to Michael Carrick and Jack Wilshere, both late substitutes.

England’s second goal came on 62 minutes when Sturridge stole possession and fed Welbeck down the left. Boskovic succeeded in steering the ball past his own goalkeeper.

With less than 20 minutes left, Montenegro's  substitute Fatos Beqiraj’s shot was re-directed past Hart by Damjanovic.

In injury time Sturridge won a penalty at the expense of Kecojevic and scored to give England four goals.

Rooney has been capped 84 times by England, and has 36 international goals to his name.

England currently lead Group H with 16 points from eight games. They will battle Montenegro and Poland in the nation’s final two qualification matches at Wembley Stadium in London on 11th and 15th October.

Rooney admitted that the two games will not be easy for England, but believes his side have the quality to attain victories in both matches.

Rooney has warned his mates to not underestimate their opponents.

“We're going to do it. We're going to get to the World Cup”, Rooney told FA’s official site," said Rooney. "I'm confident, we're confident, but you always have to be sure you're not over-confident.

“These are going to be two tough games for us, but we're good enough to do it."

Goals will be at a premium but experienced Manchester United forward Rooney believes there are several players in the England squad who can help him deliver the needed goals.

"It is probably the best group of strikers we have had since I have been in the England squad," Rooney said. "Rickie Lambert is scoring goals for Southampton and has done really well for England. Jermain Defoe and I have been around a bit longer and Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck bring a lot of energy. Overall, it is a really good blend."

"Daniel has been in tremendous form for Liverpool this season," said Rooney. "He has scored a lot of goals. He has been given a vote of confidence by the manager at Liverpool who has trusted him to play up front. He has delivered.

"I am sure if we play together we will try and work together, try and link up and try and score goals between the two of us."

"We will need the experienced players," said Rooney." Obviously there are more younger players in the squad than there has ever been. The experienced players have been there and done it. They can keep that calmness for us.

"It is a tense situation. There are a lot of nerves and sometimes you can hear that through the crowd as well. It is going to be really important that our experienced players help us in those games."

"For a country like ours, with the talent we have, it would be a failure not to qualify," Rooney said when asked about the prospect of Roy Hodgson's team failing to get to Brazil. "As players, we will all take the responsibility if we don't get there. But we are positive and excited about the games coming up. We have to be confident in ourselves. We believe in ourselves."

David Beckham Update

David Beckham 11

David Beckham

David Beckham

Sir Alex Ferguson was David Beckham's manager for most of his Premiership career before moving to Real Madrid. Fergie said Beckham may have lost focus following his marriage to Posh, "the girl from the Spice Girls,".

David Beckham became England's most-capped outfield player before the midfielder's departure from Old Trafford in 2003. Beckham won one La Liga title in four years in Madrid before moving to the United States for a new chapter in his career.

In an interview with PBS, Sir Alex Ferguson said Beckham was subject to a change in "celebrity status" after marrying.

"As a young kid when I got him at 12 years of age his great desire was [to play] some of the best football," Ferguson said in a transcript of the PBS interview published by The Times.

"He was a fantastic trainer, practiced all the time. At nighttime he would come by with the schoolboys and practice with them. And he was in that collection. And then of course, his life changed, when he married the girl from The Spice Girls, yeah. And his focus changed.

"He got drawn into the - that celebrity status, you know? And for me, I'm a football man. I'm a football man. He lost the focus. And when we sold him to Real Madrid, he did well."

"I couldn't believe that he goes to LA Galaxy. I couldn't believe that. I couldn't understand that. I would never do that, you know? If I was going to go, I would be making sure he would go to the best, and Real Madrid was the best, I would say, and United."But he reinvented himself. He goes and plays for the English national team for a couple more years. He goes and plays for AC Milan [in the] European Cup. He's unbelievable. He really is - and good, well done to him. You can't argue with the status he has in life."

Beckham retired from football at the end of last season at the age of 38 following a short spell at Paris St. Germaine.

"Well, for me, it would have pleased me more to see him be a great, great player, you know?" Ferguson added.

"As I said, I'm a football man. But how can I argue with life? He's an icon for young people... and represents himself the proper way. And I say well done.

"Amazing boy, yeah. I mean, how he has created himself. He's fantastic. Wonderful boy."
