Ahead of Friday's World Cup draw, we reveal your best and worst-case scenarios for England's group

England manager Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane

“I think, in my mind, my gauge of success would be that we come back from the tournament with the fans proud of how we’ve played and that means we’ll have played well and won some matches,” said Southgate. “So that’s my focus, to focus on the performances and to constantly improve on the performances.”

England’s Harry Kane sees no reason for the Three Lions to worry about their World Cup opponents and groups.

“I’m not one to really think about trying to avoid teams,” said Kane. “If you want to win a big tournament, you’re going to have to play the best teams sooner or later. We’re positive, but we’re not getting too ahead of ourselves. We know we’ve still got a lot of work to do and we’ve got some great friendly games coming up between now and the finals.”

Gary Lineker will co-host the 2018 World Cup draw. Former England striker Gary Lineker will play a crucial role in deciding his home country's World Cup fate. The Match of the Day presenter will conduct the draw for the group stages of the World Cup alongside Russian sports journalist Maria Komandnaya.

"As a player, I was fortunate enough to take part in the World Cup finals on two occasions," Lineker told Fifa's official website.  "It is quite special to be involved in yet another tournament, now on the stage, unveiling the results of the draw. I have been on the other side, waiting to find out my opponents, and I know how exciting this occasion is."

Lineker was forced to defend his decision to host the draw having been a vocal critic of Fifa corruption in recent years.

"I’m hosting the draw for a World Cup that I’ve watched all my life, played in twice, won its Golden boot and will present for. I just wish I could still play in it. Doesn’t make it a political endorsement."

Lineker revealed he drawn England in a group containing Belgium, Senegal, and Japan during a rehearsal for Friday's main event.

"Just had my first production and logistics meeting for next week’s draw," he tweeted.  "Had a quick run through (it’s complicated) and England ended up in Group B with Belgium, Senegal, and Japan."

England qualified for the World Cup without losing a single game in qualifying and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes Gareth Southgate's side have the ability to lift win the tournament.

"I think England must have a chance because the players are really good," Mourinho told Sky Sports News. "There's a great generation of players at different ages and with different qualities. They have good experience at club level, playing in the Premier League and plenty of them play in the Champions League too. England have great potential to do something important."

Mourinho did concede that Southgate's men would not go into next summer as tournament favorites.

"In South America, there are a couple of important teams, in Europe the same three or four so I can't believe next summer we will have a huge surprise."

Gareth Southgate has suggested he might prepare his team for the prospect of a penalty shootout by making his players take penalties in front of a crowd at Wembley. Southgate has hinted that England could practice penalties in front of a crowd at Wembley.

"It's something that we are considering how we prepare best for penalty shoot-outs," said Southgate. "Whether that's something on the training ground, whether that's in sessions we do away from the training ground, or something we do in some sort of match scenario. We've not finalized that yet but clearly, that is an option."

England manager Gareth Southgate names Three Lions squad for International Friendlies with Germany and Brazil

Manager Gareth Southgate has named his squad for England's upcoming international friendlies with Germany and Brazil. Chelsea duo Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are named in the squad alongside Liverpool's Joe Gomez. Manchester United's Ashley Young got a call-up. Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Winks has also been selected after his impressive run of form, while Danny Rose is also back in the squad after recovering from injury.

Versatile Ashley Young’s recent excellent form with Manchester United is noted by England manager Gareth Southgate, who has named Young in his latest Three Lions squad. Young has not played for England since a World Cup qualifying match against Ukraine on 10 September 2013 but has kept his dream alive of representing his country again.

"His performances warrant it," said Southgate of Young. "We want to play with wing-backs. He's played very well for Manchester United. We generally want to look to younger players but, if a more senior player is playing well, we should include him. He’s a player every Manchester United manager has picked, and that tells me something about his mentality and the trust they have in him."

Manchester United’s Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard, and Marcus Rashford have also been named in Southgate’s squad for the upcoming friendly matches against Germany and Brazil at Wembley Stadium. When asked about Chris Smalling's omission Southgate replied:

"I have huge respect for him. I know what Chris can do. There are some young defenders and it's a great chance to look at them."

England captain Harry Kane scores late goal to save the match against Scotland on his debut as skipper

England World Cup 2018 Russia first round qualifiers update

Arsenal striker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring for England. Just in time, England Captain Harry Kane volleyed in an injury-time equalizer to tie the score against the Scots 2-2 after Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths came through with two superlative free kicks that looked like legend-making magic to Scottish fans as the strikes went to the right and left of England super goalie No.1, Joe Hart.  Scotland were ever so close to their first win over the auld enemy since 1999 - their first at Hampden since 1985. Gordon Strachan’s Scotland side almost tasted victory against their arch-rivals England, but instead, two precious World Cup points went up in smoke. "It was never my intention to play Joe in this game," said England manager Gareth Southgate before the match in Paris.

Scotland v England - FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier

England Captain Harry Kane volleys in an injury-time equalizer to tie score against Scotland 2-2

Tottenham Hotspur star striker Harry Kane will remain captain after leading his England side as they drew 2-2 with Scotland in a fight to the finish on Saturday. In his past four appearances for club and country combined, Harry Kane has scored nine goals.

Thirty-one-year-old Heaton will make his debut start for England in a career that has seen him play in all four divisions in England. Heaton did not feature on the first team at Manchester United and has since played for Swindon, Antwerp, Cardiff, QPR, Rochdale, Wycombe and Bristol City as well as the Clarets.

Heaton will be winning his third cap for England with both of his previous appearances coming off the bench.

"Obviously I have played across all four divisions, the ambition never left me, that hunger to play for England," Heaton said. "It might have felt, for other people, a long way off at certain times, playing down in League Two, but I never lost that belief."

Manchester City goalkeeper Hart played the full 90 minutes at Hampden Park, giving up two late free kicks from Scotland’s Leigh Griffiths.

After the match, Southgate was asked if Hart was at fault for the goals.

"They were great free-kicks. Beyond that, coaching conversations I have with players stay private,” said Southgate. "If we go down that route then it's not the right thing to do. I go back to the concession of free-kicks being the starting point. There are many areas we could have done better."

Scotland v England - FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier

Thirty-year-old Joe Hart has won 71 caps for England. However, Hart faces fierce competition from Butland, Heaton, and Southampton's Fraser Forster to keep his No.1 shirt.

"You need to give players the opportunity," said Southgate. "In the past, one or two keepers have given up international football because they've not had that chance, so I'm conscious of keeping players involved."

Butland returned to active play in late April after being sidelined with a fractured ankle while on England duty in March 2016.

"We think he can also challenge for the number one spot,” said Southgate. "It is a difficult call on Fraser, who is also a very good keeper. With those four and [Sunderland's] Jordan Pickford, plus a couple of lads coming up potentially from the Championship next year, we are very healthy."

England’s clash with France on Tuesday will be the first senior England fixture with a video assistant referee. The use of VARs is being trialed by world governing body Fifa and may feature in next year's World Cup. Italian Davide Massa will referee the match, with two conventional assistant referees.

The Oasis song Don't Look Back in Anger will be played before the game as the French pay their respects to those killed in the recent attacks in London and Manchester. Fans will hold up red and white placards to form the England flag as the song is played just before the players emerge from the tunnel. Both teams will wear black armbands and a minute's silence will also be observed prior to the match.

England have won only one of their past six away games against France (D1 L4) - a 1-0 win under Glenn Hoddle in June 1997. However, they did win their last meeting with Les Bleus, in a friendly at Wembley in November 2015 (2-0).

Since Poland were beaten by Ukraine, England are assured of a play-off place but have to win on Tuesday to qualify as winners of group H.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring. England were two goals ahead through Branko Boskovic’s own goal.

Dejan Damjanovic made the score 2-1 on 71 minutes.

Hodgson selected Townsend, arguing that he had given plenty of young players like Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling a chance, and would have played Daniel Sturridge, a starter and a goalscorer last night, much more often but for injury.

Hodgson selected Sturridge, Rooney and Welbeck. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard were selected in preference to Michael Carrick and Jack Wilshere, both late substitutes.

England’s second goal came on 62 minutes when Sturridge stole possession and fed Welbeck down the left. Boskovic succeeded in steering the ball past his own goalkeeper.

With less than 20 minutes left, Montenegro's  substitute Fatos Beqiraj’s shot was re-directed past Hart by Damjanovic.

In injury time Sturridge won a penalty at the expense of Kecojevic and scored to give England four goals.
