England have not lost a qualifying match for a major competition since October 2009 in an incredible run of 39 games, with 3 different managers in charge since England then led by Fabio Capello lost 1-0 to Ukraine. New England manager Gareth Southgate has inspired his side since being promoted from his role as the manager of England’s under-21s. Southgate has overseen a period of change that now has England’s younger team in a 3-4-2-1 formation. England were eliminated by Iceland at Euro 2016. England fans staged a walkout at the qualifying match in Malta. England qualified by winning European Group F ahead of Slovakia.

England have begun their preparations for the World Cup with a series of warm-up friendlies against Italy, Brazil and Germany, two of the most successful nations in the history of the competition. A friendly against Holland in Amsterdam has also been scheduled after Southgate told the FA he wanted a run of challenging fixtures, rather than games when England would be expected to win easily, and that he believes it is worth taking the risks that apply when playing top tier tough opposition.

Great seats and England tickets for Brazil, Germany, and Belgium are for sale for all three matches.

Tottenham Hotspurs’ Harry Kane and Harry Winks will both undergo assessments at Spurs before joining up after being substituted in their win over Crystal Palace.

Winks is a major doubt with an ankle injury. Kane who is expected to be England’s permanent captain may be out due to a hamstring injury. Dele Alli is out of England’s friendlies with Brazil and Germany with a hamstring problem. Jordan Henderson missed Liverpool’s win over West Ham United due to a thigh problem.

Southgate’s team were jeered by their own fans during the 4-0 win in Malta when three of England’s goals came after most of their traveling supporters had already decided they had seen enough and headed for the exits. Southgate’s response to the first-half barracking was to withdraw Raheem Sterling at half-time when the score was still 0-0, but he said the Manchester City player had accepted the decision.

“As a creative player, some days everything you do works and some days it doesn’t,” Southgate said. “You could see in the first half, it was the latter for Raheem – but he will bounce back from that. He’s ballsy. He’s a lad we love. It’s difficult but he took it really professionally.”

Wayne Rooney update

Wayne Rooney announced his retirement from international football in September after missing out on two previous squads and Southgate insists that he has moved forward.

"I think Wayne made his decision clear, his decision to retire, we were looking at bringing him into the squad in September much for his value as a senior player as anything else,” said Southgate. "But we've now moved forward, evolved as a squad in the last three months and our feeling now is that it's important for the younger players to gain that experience rather than look back at a younger player."

Zidane hopes France will face some tough teams early in World Cup competition. Zidane won the World Cup with France in 1998 and hopes that les Bleus are handed the chance to pit themselves against the best from the outset when the eight groups are allocated on Friday.

Cristiano Ronaldo is "monstrous" for the way he has been performing for Real Madrid and Portugal this campaign, said Zidane..

CR7 has scored four times in the Seleccao's two-legged World Cup play-off against Sweden to secure a place in Brazil and has been in top  form for the Blancos this season.

"Cristiano Ronaldo has shown what he can do for Portugal and Real Madrid," Zidane, who is part of the coaching staff at Santiago Bernabeu, told reporters in Brazil ahead of the World Cup 2014 group stage draw on Friday.

"He does not need to talk much. Much has been said of him, but what he does on the pitch is monstrous. The way he won the match against Sweden, when many people thought Portugal would not qualify... he carried the team on his back.

"He has shown that he is an excellent player. I'm proud to stand beside him at Madrid, to see him in training, participating in everything.

"He's a great professional, arriving an hour before training. What he has done on the pitch is the result of his hard work. He's an example and really carries and drives the team."

"I would love it if France could get put in a difficult group," he added. "I want us to play against the best and achieve something more. I'm not afraid for us to tackle tough teams."
