Premiership Update : Peter Cech Voted Best Barclays Premier League Goalkeeper

Chelsea's superstar goalkeeper, Petr Cech has reached 150 League clean sheets after Chelsea's 2-0 win at Hull City last weekend, Cech has been voted Best Barclays Premiership goalkeeper with former Manchester United goalies Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar in second and third. David Seaman finished fourth and David James fifth.

David James, the former England goalkeeper, played for five different teams in the Barclays Premier League during his long career and still holds the record for the number of clean sheets, with 169. However Petr Cech, who joined Chelsea in 2004, has reached the 150 mark a lot sooner, having competed in far fewer matches in his career to date. His Stamford Bridge team-mate Mark Schwarzer is only two behind and former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman close behind him.

Cech has the highest save percentage in history of the Barclays Premier League, leading Tottenham Hostpur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and Manchester City's Joe Hart.

Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, was the first player to reach 100 clean sheets in the Barclays Premier League and ended his career with 129. Man United's Edwin van der Sar, holds the record for the longest run of consecutive clean sheets going 14 matches without conceding a goal for United in 2008/09, breaking Cech's record of 10 consecutive clean sheets during his debut season in 2004/05.

Going into the weekend, Arsenal remain on top of the Premier League Table with Manchester City and Chelsea close behind.

England Premier League Results - Matchday 9

After the hard-fought clash, Man United boss David Moyes said, "I thought with 15 to 20 minutes to go the supporters were terrific - they drove the team on and they played a big part in getting the result.

"I thought in the end we had to go for it. I thought we did a lot of good things but an awful lot of really poor things that put us in the situation we were in.

"We got ourselves back in the game just before half-time only to concede from a poor, poor free-kick.

"That got us going in at half-time on a downer but I said at half-time your job is to win the game and you're more than capable of doing it. We needed the substitutes today and they made a big difference."

Liverpool easily beat West Brom 4-0 with three goals from Luis Suarez at 12, 17 and 55 minutes. Daniel Sturridge scored at 77 minutes. West Brom’s only goal came from James Morrison at 66 minutes.

Premier League leaders Arsenal continued their winning streak today with a 2-0 away victory against Crystal Palace.

Valerenga 0-0 Manchester United - Premier League Tickets

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United

Valerenga 0-0 Manchester United

Rooney was given extended leave following Euro 2012.

To date he has only competed in two matches after serving a two-game ban.

The 26-year-old returned to action for United in last Sunday’s goalless pre-season friendly with Norwegian side Valerenga in Oslo.

“I’m happy with how I’m doing. I’ve been training for almost two weeks and I’ve been working hard.

“Everything’s going well so far. I feel good. Everybody needs games to get up to match fitness, not just me.

“I’m training well, though, and I’m looking forward to the next few games. Hopefully, by the start of the season, I’ll be ready to play.”

Rooney said FC Barcelona will be a test of United’s pre-season form ahead of the league opener with Everton at Goodison Park on August 20.

“It’s great to play in big games and Barcelona is one of them,” remarked Rooney.

“It’s all part of our preparation and we need to make sure we do the right things. We want to enjoy the game and get our fitness ready for the first game of the season.

“The result, in some ways, isn’t the most important thing. What’s important is the fitness and the sharpness.”

United have only scored three goals in four pre-season matches however Nemanja Vidic is optomistic.

“When you see the kind of chances we’re creating it’s a relief,” said Vidic.

“I know we haven’t scored many goals, that we’re not clinical in front of goal yet, but it will come.

“We have the next few games to work on that and fix that. I’m not really worried about it.

“If you look at the team that played on Sunday I think we had about five or six players who were playing their first game after almost two months.

“Some played almost 90 minutes and to do that after nearly two months off is a difficult ask, especially when we played against a team that has 15 games already in their legs.

“But I think a lot of guys have returned from their summer break a lot fitter than usual. You can see it in their body language and this is a positive sign.”
