Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid side win 2017 Spanish Super Cup

Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-0 to win the Supercopa de España or the Spanish Super Cup, a Spanish football championship contested by the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

After winning both legs of the Supercopa de España, Real Madrid lifted the trophy on a 5-1 aggregate win at Camp Nou in Madrid as the hosts quickly scored another stunner to put any doubts to rest. Real added their second trophy to their collection this season. Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane continued his incredible run as manager on Wednesday night as he won his second trophy of the 2017-18 season, without Cristiano Ronaldo, before the start of the Spanish La Liga season. Real Madrid saw off their arch rivals easily, even with Ronaldo and several other key players not on the squad, in a match against their arch-rivals Barca. No doubt Ernesto Valverde is concerned.

Cristiano Ronaldo was banned for five games in the first leg. Ronaldo’s first booking was for taking off his shirt. The second red was for diving in a terrible decision by the referee. Ronaldo's little shove afterward was a bad decision, and that push caused Ronaldo to be given a tough ban.

Cristiano Ronaldo called his five-match ban for pushing a referee “exaggerated and ridiculous” and claims he is being persecuted after failing to have the sanction overturned on appeal.

During Sunday night’s Spanish Super Cup 3-1 first-leg victory over Barcelona, in which Ronaldo had scored, the Real Madrid forward reacted badly after being shown a second yellow for diving by match official Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, shoving the referee in the back. A Spanish football federation (RFEF) Committee dismissed an appeal, meaning Ronaldo missed out on Wednesday evening’s Supercopa return leg against Barça and will miss upcoming La Liga games against Deportivo La Coruña, Valencia, Levante and Real Sociedad. Ronaldo reacted angrily on social media: “It’s impossible to stay quiet in this situation, five matches! To me it seems exaggerated and ridiculous, this is what you call persecution! Thanks to my team-mates and to the fans for the support.”

In the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup, Real Madrid and Barcelona battled for the first major trophy available in Spain. Real went into the match holding a 3-1 aggregate lead after goals from Leo Messi, Gerard Pique (an own goal), Marco Asensio and Cristiano Ronaldo lit up the first. Real boss Zinedine Zidane and his side seized the opportunity to add to their incredible trophy haul while Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde is learning about life without Neymar.

asensio scores a goal

The Bernabeu erupts as Marco Asensio celebrates his goal

Marco Ascenio was key to Real Madrid’s victory against Barca as he scored sensational goals in both legs of the tie with Barca in the 2017 Spanish Super Cup. At Camp Nou he scored an amazing goal, and at the Santiago Bernabéu, he opened the match scoring with another.

“My two goals in the Spanish Super Cup were great and I will look back on them fondly,” said Ascenio. “The fans show us incredible support and so naturally we want to reward them with titles. We were playing at home and had to really turn it on, and we created opportunities, we played the better football over the tie.”

Keylor Navas

Real Madrid goalie Keylor Nevas stops Barca superstar Lionel Messi in Supercopa de España second leg

Madridista goalie Keylor Navas has played in a milestone 100 official games for Real Madrid following the Spanish Super Cup return leg win. The talented goalkeeper is in his fourth season at Real Madrid, winning 74 games and 8 titles. His 100 games are spread across six competitions: LaLiga (67), Champions League (25), Copa del Rey (3), Club World Cup (2), Spanish Super Cup (2) and UEFA Super Cup (1).

“We're happy to win titles and keep looking to the future,” said Costa Rican Navas. “It is great to win and more so against a big rival. We worked hard in the preseason, we are doing well physically, we're confident. We have a great group and we're fighting for every possible title”.

Juventus v Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League Final

Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid side are winning trophies at an amazing rate, with a 100% haul in finals to date. Under the Frenchman, the side have won every final they have played in, including this Spanish Super Cup 2017 final. This impeccable run started with la Undécima and the penalty shootout win over Atlético Madrid. Then Sevilla and Kashima Antlers were both defeated in the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, respectively. In 2017, the victories came in the la Duodécima win over Juventus and the Super Cups against Manchester United (UEFA Super Cup) and Barcelona (Spanish Super Cup). La Liga number 33 completes the fantastic haul Zidane has overseen.

Real Madrid CF v Club Atletico de Madrid - UEFA Champions League Semi Final: First Leg

Zinedine Zidane continued making European football history for Real Madrid fans as he enjoyed another win in his string of successes as Madridista coach – this time he and his side won the Spanish Super Cup. Real Madrid manager Zidane the was thrilled with the efforts of his team.

“We had to be ready on the 8th of August for the first title. We've won two significant trophies against two big rivals. It stands us in good stead to start the season. Now La Liga begins and it's going to be even more difficult,” said Zidane. “I'm pleased with how we're doing things, and in particular with how we're playing. The first 15 or 20 minutes were spectacular in pressing high up and how we kept hold of the ball. It was a very good first half. In the second we had to dig in a bit because this opposition can cause you problems, that's to be expected. We wanted to play just as we did and when things go to plan you're happy. The players were fantastic. We're not going to get euphoric, this is a long-run thing and we'll enjoy the moment”.

“It's not just Asensio, everyone's doing a great job and working well,” added Zidane. They all do what's expected of them. Now we're starting over. We're going to have to show it again in La Liga. It's going to be a difficult season against tough opposition. The players are in great shape and they know what they want to achieve. It's a group who want to keep winning matches and trophies. I'm enjoying all that's happening now. I'm thrilled with Marco's goal because I love football and when I see a goal like that I'm impressed, just like everyone who enjoys the game”.

“The players deserve it,” continued Zidne. “They are talented and working hard. Winning two trophies against the likes of Manchester United, a great team, and Barcelona is not easy. Behind that lies our will and hard work. This team is hungry and you see that when we play. This is a great way to start, everyone is content. We are going into a long season, but we are ready”.

“There were many key things, the important thing is that we believe, which we do. We played well in both legs. The first half was spectacular. We were strong from the start. It was the game we expected and we are thrilled. It is another trophy, we have to congratulate the players, they were great,” said Zidane. ”I’m really pleased, I love my work and winning 7 titles with these players... It is a great start and we’re still on the run we were on before, having won LaLiga and the Champions League. We are coming to the end of one part, we've got another couple of titles and now we start the season, we have to do everything to win and it will be complicated. I have a spectacular squad and when I make changes you notice it. It is true that taking Isco out, after a great game against Barcelona, can be tough on the player. But the players know this will be a long road and we’ll play more than 65 games. I am happy when I change the team around without changing the dynamic”.

Barcelona superstar striker Lionel Messi competes for ball v Juventus

BARCELONA FC UPDATE - BARCELONA FOOTBALL TICKETS

Barcelona superstar striker Lionel Messi trained alone after Barcelona’s humbling 3-0 defeat to Italian giants Juventus in their first leg Champions League quarter-final tie in Turin. Messi missed Luis Enrique’s dressing-down of his side after the massive Juventus defeat. Enrique spoke to his side for half an hour ahead of Wednesday’s training session however Messi was not present at the meeting.

Messi has trained alone in the aftermath of a big match and Barcelona did not report that the Argentine striker was suffering with any illness or injury. Reportedly Messi chose to train on his own in the gym ahead of Barcelona’s La Liga cmatch with Real Sociedad on Saturday. Messi’s friend and teammate Neymar was also training in the gym after he was ruled out of this weekend’s match with Real Sociedad through suspension.

A double from Juventus’ Paulo Dybala and Giorgio Chiellini’s second-half header means Juve go into the return leg at Camp Nou with an early advantage in the crucial Champions League quarter-final clash that will determine which club will progress to earn a spot in the 2017 Champions League Semi-finals..

Luis Enrique will step down as Barcelona manager this summer. Enrique was furious after Barcas amazing 3-0 defeat as tensions continue to rise at Barcelona who have suffered a frustrating campaign both domestically and in Europe.

To date the top goal scorers in the Spanish Primera League are Lionel Messi, Barcelona 27 goals; Luis Suarez, Barcelona 24 goals; Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid 19 goals; Iago Aspas, Celta de Vigo 16 goals; Antoinne Griezmann, Atletico Madrid 15 goals.
