Ballon d'Or 2010 - Lionel Messi Wins Prize For World's Best Player

It is the second year in a row he has won the award for the footballer of the year. He previously was the undisputed winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award and the Ballon d'Or award. This year both awards have merged into one single title.

Attacker Lionel Messi hopes his manager Pep Guardiola will sign a contract extension at the Camp Nou, saying that he could not imagine being at the club without their influential leader. He said he wants Guardiola to commit his long-term future to the Blaugrana.

“He will renew whenever he decides to, but I hope that he will renew and stay with the club. After what he has brought to Barcleona, it is difficult to imagine the club without him.

“I always look for a place on the pitch where I can be in contact with the ball, and this is a detail that is in how he wants the team to play.”

The Ballon d’Or winner discussed his delight at being named the world’s best player as well,
adding that he felt embarrassed that he forgot to thank his colleagues Xavi and Andres Iniesta, whom he beat to the award.

“We know the relationship we have, and it will continue to same, that is all we need to know, but I was concentrating so much on the gala, that I forgot about Xavi and Iniesta.

“At all times I know that my individual achievements are thanks to a collective success. Everything I have won is thanks to the team, which makes us win."
