Tottenham Hotspur is in second, Manchester City is in third, Liverpool is in fourth, Arsenal is in fifth, Manchester United in in sixth, and Everton is in seventh.

Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal

Arsenal defeated by Liverpool without Sanchez

Liverpool goals: Roberto Firmino 9, Sadio Mane 40, Georginio Wijnaldum 90 +0:44

Arsenal goal: Danny Welbeck 57

With Alexis Sanchez starting the match on the bench, Arsenal lost to Liverpool. Gunners fans were baffled as to why Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger decided not to start Sanchez who is currently one of the highest goal scorers in the England Premier League. After the loss Wenger defended his decision to drop Alexis Sanchez against Liverpool by suggesting that he wanted to take a more direct approach. Wenger's decision to drop Sanchez to the bench for the trip to Anfield on Saturday was questioned but the Arsenal boss moved to clarify his stance before the game. Asked why he had replaced the Chilean with Olivier Giroud, after opting to play with a lone target man, Wenger replied, “We've decided to play with Welbeck and Giroud because we decided that we will have to fight in the air as well.”

Liverpool defeated the Gunners to move up to third behind Spurs. Liverpool Fc beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield Stadium on Saturday evening with goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum. Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead and opened the match scoring when Firmino responded to a cross by Mane and the Brazilian slotted the ball cooly past Gunners No 1 goalie Petr Cech. Mane then doubled the lead at 40 minutes firing the ball low into the net. Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck scored at 57 minutes putting pressure briefly on the hosts but Georginio Wijnaldum scored the third for the Reds to wrap up proceedings, scoring in injury time.

Wenger’s plan to win without Sanchez backfired, with Liverpool 2-0 up at half-time, andWenger decided to bring Sanchez into the action in the second half. Alexis helped to inspire a partial comeback, setting up Danny Welbeck to score for the Gunners. Sanchez has made 34 appearances for Arsenal this season and has scored 20 goals. There is speculation over the 28-year-old striker’s future at the Gunners after Juventus bid £25million for him. The Gunners know they may lose the Chilean forward in the summer transfer window so Wenger may have wanted to see how his side would do without Alexis, Rumor has it that Sanchez is demanding a huge pay increase to remain with Arsenallll. Sanchez's contract expires in the summer of 2018. Arsenal have offered Sanchez a contract worth around £180,000-a-week, a £50,000 per week increase.

Reportedly Alexis Sanchez wants to quit Arsenal at the end of the season after being dropped by Wenger for Saturday’s 3-1 defeat by Liverpool. The Chilean’s relationship with Wenger, the Arsenal coaches and his team-mates is reportedly after the Gunners Champions League loss to Bayern Munich with a bust-up after Sanchez stormed off the training pitch in the build-up to the trip to Anfield. Sources say Wenger has been unimpressed with Sanchez’s attitude, particularly his behavior during the 5-1 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League last month. Sanchez publicly berated his felside at the Allianz Arena and he continued to point the finger in the dressing room after the game. Team-mates say Sanchez has become distant in recent weeks, and Wenger and his staff have not been happy with his attitude at the training ground since the Bayern trumping. The 28-year-old was confronted by angry team-mates after walking out in the middle of a training session last week, a possible reason why Wenger axed his leading goal-scorer from the starting XI at Anfield. Sanchez was clearly upset and distraught by the 5-1 humiliation at Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Wenger has spoken privately to Sanchez about his negative attitude. Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are expected to bid for Alexis, who has reportedly rejected Wneger’s offer of a new deal worth £180,000 a week. PSG are willing to pay him £300,000 a week.
